Steam trap
> A device to distinguish between condensate and
steam.
> Use to discharge condensate and other non
condensable gases and keep the steam in the system.
Why steam traps are used?
1. condensate removal from pipe
2. non effective heat transfer
3. water hammering
4. corrosion
5. All the latent heat associated with steam is used.
Types:
1. mechanical traps:
 A. Float type steam trap
 B. Bucket type steam trap
2. Thermostatic traps:
 A. Balanced pressure steam trap
 B. Bimetallic steam trap
 C. Liquid expansion steam trap
A. Float type steam trap:
Float trap is a mechanical trap in which the outlet is
opened by the float as the condensate level rises.
A ball float is present in a chamber that is attached with
a valve/closing led.
Steam enters through the inlet.
The steam pressure is higher on upper side of chamber
so due to high pressure from upward the float moves
downward and the valve is closed.
As the steam condensed so now the condensate pressure
is higher than the steam pressure and hence the float
moves upward and the valve is open.
Condensate releases through the outlet.
Advantages:
 Continuously discharge condensate at steam
temperature.
Able to handle heavy or light condensate.
Resistant to water hammering.
B. Bucket type steam trap:
In this type of trap the steam is entered through the inlet
when such steam loses its energy it become cooled and
hence condensed.
The bucket floats in the condensate due to its buoyant
force and the outlet is closed.
As the condensate level rises the buoyant force from
downward become less while from upward this force is
high and thus the bucket moves downward and sinks in
the condensate and opens the outlet.
The condensate is blown out by the pressure of the
steam.
Balanced pressure steam trap :
A capsule in the form of a bellows contains a liquid. As
the condensate passes through the trap heat is
transferred to the liquid in the capsule.
Thus when surrounded by steam the liquid in the capsule
boils causing the bellows to expand and close the outlet.
Heat loss from the trap then cools the liquid surrounding
the capsule and the liquid then ceases to boil.
The vapour condenses and the bellows/capsule contracts
opening the outlet and remove the condensate.
Advantages:
Adjust itself to variation of steam pressure upto its
maximum operating pressure.
It will also tolerate upto 70c of super heat.
Disadvantages:
Susceptible to damage by water hammering and corrosion.
In almost all the thermostatic traps the balanced pressure
type does not open until the condensate temperature has
dropped below the steam temperature.
