SMART POWER GENERATION USING

FOREARMS MACHINE
ABSTRACT
 Nowadays, the field of energy conservation has become a notable change and is growing
significantly among the scientific community.
 Forearms power generation project is one of the smart power generation projects that aims at
harnessing the mechanical energy produced through the gym equipment and converting this
energy into useful electrical energy.
 The kinetic energy produced during the horizontal motion is transmitted to a generator or a
dynamo through rack and pinion arrangement to produce electricity.
 The system provides resistance to the reciprocating movement with the help of springs while
generating power.
 Due to this resistive motion, the system has a greater tendency to restore back to its original
position with minimum loss in energy.
INTRODUCTION
• As energy across the world continues to rise, there is a strong need to develop new methods for
energy conversation and power generation, particularly approaches that have less environmental
impacts.
• The use of human-power in more efficient manner for power generation has been possible due to
modern technology
• One of the methods by using human energy is “Smart power generation using forearms machine”.
• In today’s growing world pull up pull down power is the transfer of energy from a human source
through the use of rack and pinion system
• This technology is most commonly used for gym Centre or for house appliances.
• Pull up pull down power is an excellent source of energy where 95 percentage of the energy put
into pull up pull down is converted into electrical energy.
PROBLEM STATEMENT
1. Smart power generation by converting mechanical energy into electrical energy using
forearms(pull-up) machine.

2. To get the required power output(approximately 4.2 W) to light a 12 V led bulb by

optimising the gear drive and gear ratio of the system.

3. Innovating, optimising and developing the prototype of smart power generation using
forearms machine in real life.

FORMULAE
 The formulae that need to be used are:-
• Using the gear ratio or velocity ratio formula we can find the number of teeth required to
produce the required amount of power.
N1(Driver) T2(Teeth of driven or pinion gear)
N2(Driven) T1(Teeth of driver or sprocket gear)

Through the above formula we can get the number of teeth required for the pinion to drive
the generator.
• Calculation of Torque within the system

P(input) = 2.π.N1.T T = Pin.60

60 2.π.N1
• Pitch and Pitch Circle Diameter of the gears can be calculated by the following formulae:-

p1 = T1/6
p2 = T2/6
D1 = p1.cosec(180/T1)
D2 = p2. cosec(180/T2)
• Centre distance between the gears is calculated by the following formulae:-

C = D 1 + D2
2

• Power consumption by an average man in terms of Watts:-

It is assumed that an average man consumes 2500 kilocalories of energy in a day.

Assuming no weight gain or loss, this also means that 2500 kilocalories are used by the body in a day.
With 2500 kilocalories of energy, the body is able to function properly.
This allows us to do everyday activities such as reading, jogging, sleeping, etc.,
1 CALORIE = 4.2 JOULES
2500 KILOCALORIES = 1.05 x 107 J
1 day = 86400s
P = W/t = 1.05 x 107 J / 86400s = 121.5 W

So we can assume that an average man atleast consume 100W of energy everyday.

For 1 day = 100 W

1 hour = 4.1667W
8 hours(average gym running period) = 33.334W
If we take 3 to 4 equipments then
total power produced = 3 x 33.334W = 100W

• We can also find out the amount of calories burnt in our body through the output power:-
We cannot convert Watt and calories back and forth so we use Watt-hours instead of Watts.

100 Watt-Hours x (3600 seconds / 1 hour) = 360,000 J

1 cal = 4.184 J
1 J = 1/(4.184) cal
360,000 J = 360,000 J / 4.184 cal = 86,042 Calories

APPLIANCES MOTOR SHAFT

• The human workout or exercise generates energy in the form of mechanical energy.
• With the help of rack and pinion this mechanical energy is transmitted to the output shaft through gear drives.
• The output shaft rotates the generator or motor which in turn generates electrical energy.
• This energy can be stored in battery or in inverter and use it to other appliances.
APPLICATIONS OF OUR WORK
 The energy generation from gym equipment can be also enhanced as now a day most of the
population are health conscious and they are spending time for exercise in gym or another suitable
place
 In future, if the flywheel speed control device and voltage protection devices can be added with
large generation process, it would be a model all over the world.
 It can also be used to generate power when it is attached to the street light poles to generate
electricity for street lights and lamps.
 The same mechanism can be used to generate electricity in a car while it is passing through a speed
breaker.
 In future there is possible chance that every movement or activities done by the humans can be
converted into some form of useful energy through this project.
