DISEASE OF EYE
1. RETINITIS PIGMENTOSA:
It is the group of inherited eye diseases.
It causes the breakdown of photoreceptor cells (cells in the retina that detect
light)

BIONIC EYE
BIONIC is derived from the words Bio+Elecronics.
Objective of bionic eye is to provide vision to those people who are suffering
from retinal diseases.

ONGOING PROJECTS ON BIONIC EYE
1. Artificial Silicon Retinal(ASR):
The brothers Alan Chow and Vincent Chow have developed a microchip
containing 3500 photo diodes, which detects light and converts it into electrical
impulses called ASR.
ASR is a silicon chip which is 2mm in diameter and 1/1000 inches in thickness.
ASR is a solid state biocompatible chip which contains an array of photoreceptors
and is implanted to replace the functionality of defective photoreceptor cells.
Eliminates the need for wires, batteries or other secondary devices to supply
power.
Two approaches for ASR:
i)Epi-retinal approach ii)Sub-retinal approach

DISADVANTAGES
The Bionic eye cannot help the people who are blind
by birth.
Natural vision cannot be provided.
The small part is damaged it will lead to total
technique failure.
Very expensive.
