Changes in Matter

Physical Change Chemical Change

Physical Change
 affects the form or appearance of a material but not its composition
or chemical identity
 the material does NOT transform into a new substance after a
change
 the change in some physical properties such as shape, size, mass,
volume or phase of matter
 can be reversible (can return to its original form) or irreversible
(cannot return to its original form)
Examples of Physical Deformation
a collective term to describe cutting, chopping,
squashing squeezing, folding, pressing, smashing, tearing

malleable (malleability) materials that can be hammered into sheets

ductile (ductility) materials that can be transformed into wires

stretching change in length (make the object longer)

another term for compressing (making the object

shearing shorter)
Chemical Change
When there is a change in composition or structure
A new material is produced
When there is chemical reaction
Examples of Chemical Change
Practice.
Folding a piece of Decaying dead
cloth body of animals

Souring of Clay
milk molding

Digestion Chopping
of food of wood
