ICEM CFD

Geometry and Mesh Generation

1
Geometry
• Launch ICEM CFD from start menu
• Create circular cylinder in ICEM CFD with length = 8 m and diameter = 0.2 m
• First create two points (0,0,0) and (8,0,0) for axis and then use “cylinder” option from
“standard shapes”

Geometry
• Cylinder geometry

Length, L = 8 Meters
Diameter, D = 0.2 Meters
L/D Ratio = 8/0.2 = 40

Parts / Boundary conditions
• Create part names. Right click on parts in “tree outline” and create new parts.
• Write “inlet” in data entry zone and pick inlet boundary from click apply.
• Similarly create “outlet” and “wall” boundaries

Blocking
• Create block with name “FLUID”

Blocking
• O-Grid

5 Blocks
one centre block and 4
surrounding blocks

Blocking
• Set meshing parameters, and copy meshing parameters from adjacent edges (match edges).
Enable “copy parameters to all parallel edges”
On side 1:
• Convert pre-mesh into unstructured mesh First cell size = 0.001 m
No of nodes = 12
Ratio = 1.2 No of nodes = 12
Uniform sizing
side1

Side
2
For side 2, copy parameters from
adjacent edge using match edge
spacing option

Mesh Details
• Total number of nodes = 16960

• Min quality = 0.654 (>0.3)

• Min Angle = 49.68 (>18)

Mesh Export
• Set solver to CFX and export mesh
• Most Important : you cannot set BCs type for CFX in ICEM CFD. You have to create them in
CFX-Pre.
