Mastering ANSYS CFD

Workshop 2
NACA 0012 Geometry and Domain
Creation in Design Modeler
What you will learn
• Aerofoil Nomenclature

• NACA Aerofoil coordinates (Open and Closed trailing edge), excel and notepad
files

• Importing coordinates into Design modeller.

• Domain creation and file export.

• Preparing file for mapped meshing (hexa) in Ansys Meshing.

Aerofoil Nomenclature

Advanced Engineering Solutions

NACA Aerofoil Coordinates (naca 0012)
• Symmetric aerofoil, 12% max thickness at 30% chord length

• We can get coordinates from equations or from online sources

https://rebrand.ly/naca0012

• Trailing edge of aerofoil can be sharp (closed) or square (open). Different

procedures!

• Arrange coordinates from trailing edge towards leading edge (upper or lower
can be selected at choice) and then again to trailing edge.

NACA Aerofoil Coordinates
• Arrange these points in excel and also include Z coordinate and put zero in that
column. Make text file with notepad and past these points and save file(s).

• You can also include text on first row of file, but it is not necessary. Any row with
# sign will be ignored. Blank row will also be ignored. Sample is given below:

Launching Workbench and Designmodeler
• From start menu locate Workbench 18.1. Drag and drop DM. Double click on cell
to open design modeller

Create Origin (Plane) at Airfoil Trailing Edge
• Create new origin (using plane) at (1,0,0).

Advanced Engineering Solutions

Create Domain
• Select sketching more.
• Create semi circular of radius 15 (Arc by Center) and then create rectangle of
size 25*15 (from 3 points)
• Trim extra edges.

Advanced Engineering Solutions

Create Surfaces
• Create 2 surfaces, one for airfoil and one for domain.

Advanced Engineering Solutions

Creation of Fluid Domain
• Subtracte airfoil surface from outer surface to create fluid domain.

Advanced Engineering Solutions

Domain Preparation for Mapped Mesh
• Now we want to divide domain
into four parts, so that we can
apply mapped meshing in Ansys
meshing.
• However it is not needed for
ICEMCFD Hexa meshing.
• In plan 4 (same plane, where we
made sketch for outer domain)
create two lines, one vertical and
second horizontal.
• Trim extra edges, which are
outside domain.

Advanced Engineering Solutions

Domain Preparation for Mapped Mesh
• Use two lines (Sketch 3) to create lines.
• Use Face Split from Tools menu and vertical and
horizontal lines to split face into 4 parts.

Named Selection
• Useful for Ansys Meshing
• Select geometry (edges)
and right click. Click
named selection and input
name for boundary. Then
click on generate.
• Create inlet, outlet and
airfoil boundaries.
