Diesel
• Diesel fuel in general is any liquid
specifically designed for use in
diesel engines, whose fuel ignition
takes place, without any spark, as a
result of compression of the inlet air
mixture and then injection of fuel.
• Diesel Fuel is the common term for
the petroleum distillate fuel oil sold
for use in motor vehicles that use
the compression ignition engine
named for it’s inventor,
Properties of Deiseal Fuel

• Ignition quality: cetane number and cetane index.

• Density (and gravity)
• Heating value.
• Volatility (distillation temperature)
• Viscosity
Comprising of Diesel Fuel
• One of the most important differences between gas and
diesel engines is the thermal efficiency of diesel engines, or
the work that can be expected to be produced by the fuel put
into the engine. A diesel engine is about 20% more thermal
efficient than a gas engine
•  gasoline engines hit the 120,000-150,000 mile mark, the
cylinders will start to show some wear, which decreases
efficiency.
• diesel engines are designed similarly to gas engines, the
cylinder on a diesel engine has a removable liner. When the
engine reaches 200,000 or 300,000 miles
In a gasoline engine, the explosion process is
• Intake stroke – fuel is mixed with air
• Compression stroke – piston goes up, mixture of
fuel and air is compressed
• Ignition stroke – fuel/air is ignited through the use
of a spark plug
• Exhaust stroke – piston goes up, pushes exhaust
through the exhaust valve
diesel engine, the explosion process is
• Intake stroke – intake valve opens, air in, piston
goes down
• Compression stroke – piston goes up, air
compressed (heated in excess of 540°C)
• Combustion stroke – fuel is injected (right time),
ignition, piston goes down
• Exhaust – piston goes up, pushes exhaust through
the exhaust
Can a diesel engine run on gasoline?

• A diesel engine cannot run on clean gasoline, but

it can run on diesel mixed with gasoline. The main
thing is that the amount of this gasoline does not
exceed one-tenth of the total volume of fuel.
•  If this proportion increases, the engine will lose
power and eventually will stop working
altogether. Running a diesel on any amount of
gasoline is not recommended
 different types of diesel fuel
1. Petroleum diesel Petroleum diesel, or fossil diesel, is the most common
type of fuel, used in freight trucks, trains, buses and farm and construction
vehicles.
2. Synthetic diesel the desire to find long-term low-carbon fuel
alternatives has seen the development of synthetic diesel. It can be produced
from any carbonaceous material which is not limited to biomass, biogas,
natural gas and coal.
3. Biodiesel. Biodiesel is an alternative renewable fuel source to petroleum-
derived diesel that is made from vegetable oils, animal fats or recycled
restaurant grease
4. Hydrogenated oils and fats While similar to synthetic diesel, this
category of diesel involves converting the triglycerides (a chemical
compound known as ester which is derived from glycerol and fatty
acids) found in vegetable oils and animal fats into alkanes with a
process that refines and hydrates the substance.
Benefits Of Diesel Fuel
• Diesel fuel is one of the most efficient and energy dense fuels available
todays
• Diesel get great mileage they typically deliver 25 to 30 percent better
fuel economy than similarly performing gasoline engines
• Diesels have no spark plugs or distributors, therefore, they never need
ignition tune-ups
• There is no sparking as the fuel auto-ignites. The absence of spark-plugs
or spark wires lowers maintenance costs
• Reduce Friction
• Quicker start-up
• Keep unwanted moisture out
The emissions from diesel engines
• The diesel engine is an auto-ignition engine in which fuel and air are
mixed inside the engine. The air required for combustion is highly
compressed inside the combustion chamber
• This generates high temperatures which are sufficient for the diesel fuel
to ignite spontaneously when it is injected into the cylinder
• Carbon and hydrogen construct the origin of diesel fuel like most fossil
fuels. For ideal thermodynamic equilibrium, the complete combustion of
diesel fuel would only generate CO2 and H2O in combustion chambers of
engine
Emissions of diesel exhaust have a
negative impact on one's health.

• Air pollution as a cause of increased asthma and

allergy
• Immunology and allergy
• The role of endogenous nitric oxide
• Cardiovascular effects
In Summary

• Diesel Fuels is one of the highest operating costs for

any engine
• Repairing a diesel fuel systems can be costly, so
routing fuel analysis should be performed
• Applications for testing, Deliveries, storage, transfer
Troubleshooting
• Samples can be tested at the nozzle, fuel tank or
storage tank
