Revision Circuits

(Pre Flight Brief)

Aim
To consolidate all circuit
procedures to a consistent
standard suitable for the stage one
flight check.
Objectives:
• Accurately fly a standard circuit pattern in reference to ground
features.
• Make a stabilised approach and landing using standard
procedures .
• Safely make an approach and landing using a flapless
configuration.
• Recognise and manage an engine failure after take off using
standard procedures.
• Recognise and manage an engine failure in the circuit and
conduct a glide approach using standard procedures.
• Conduct a go-around using correct procedure following a
requirement to do so.
Required Resources:
a. SFC standard forms
i. SFCJ E401-C172 Loading Data
ii. SFCJ E402-C172 Weight and Balance Calculations
iii. SFCJ E403-C172 Performance Takeoff & Landing Data
iv. SFCJ E406-ATIS & clearance record

b. Jandakot Aerodrome chart

c. Perth Visual Terminal chart
Background Resources:
a. Mass Briefs 3,4 complete.
b. Aviation Theory Centre-Flight Training Manual
c. SFC Flight Crew Training Manual
d. Operation Manual
i. A.1-A.6
ii. App B1- Standard Operation Procedure (SOP’s)
e. C172R Pilot Operating Handbook
f. Visual Flight Guide
g. Day VFR Syllabus
Required knowledge:
Primary Visual Cue during Take off run:
Far end of the runway
Flapless IAS on BASE and FINAL:
75kts and 70 kts
Glide speed :
65kts
Performance Takeoff, required flaps:
10 degrees flaps( extend during ”before takeoff check”)
Performance Takeoff, Delay requirement:
5~10 second delay, Requesting ATC required.
Performance Takeoff, rotation speed:
51kts
Performance Takeoff, 50feet;
57kts
Performance Takeoff, Climb at:
60kts
Required knowledge:
Performance Takeoff, flaps up when:
Passing 300 feet( 200 feet AGL)
Short Field Landing VREF:
62kts
Aiming point on Final:
The edge of piano keys , instead of runway number.

Primary Visual Cue during Landing Sequence:

Far end of the runway
Crosswind Landing, Rudder/Aileron Input during hold off:
Rudder/Aileron input to be increased as required as aircraft decelerates.
EFATO, Initial action:
Lower nose to select glide attitude(65kts) Trim, aim towards
suitable landing area(+-30’ either side of aircraft heading)
Other malfunction, ASI became U/S:
Fly the aircraft based on Power + Attitude in each leg of circuit
Make full stop landing safely.
Exercise

1. Normal/flapless/glide/crosswind
2. Short field take off & landing
3. EFATO
4. Go Around
5. Sideslip
6. Other malfunctions
Exercise
• You will start up the aircraft using the checklist.
• You will handle the radio communications
• You will taxi the aircraft
• You will take-off conduct circuits
• You will land the aircraft
Tolerances:
• Heading +/- 10°
• Altitude +/- 150ft
• Climb +5/-0kts
• Descent +/- 10kts
• Glide +10/-5kts
• Speed +/-10kts
• Final Appr. +5/-0kts
• Turns +/-5° AoB
Threat and error management

Threat: Traffic joining circuit from FDL

Response: Monitor the movement of joining traffic with listening watch and look out
Outcome: Maintain safe traffic separation.

Error: Unable to spot joining traffic

Response: “Request Traffic to Follow” to ATC, to locate the traffic
Outcome: Maintain safe traffic separation.

UAS: Air Speed Indicator became unserviceable on Upwind.

Response: Fly the aircraft based on Power + Attitude for each leg of circuit.
Outcome: Make full stop landing safely after flying accurate circuit.
Airmanship
• Engine and airframe limitations to be adhered to
at all times.
• Awareness of proximate traffic position and
intentions to be maintained.
• Clear LOOKOUT to be made prior to all turns
both airborne and on the ground
