To introduce basic control of the aircraft by sole
reference to flight instruments Objectives: • State the selective radial scan for each manoeuvre
• State power and attitude setting to maintain
performance for each stage of flight
• Recall the disorientation effects with loss of visual
cues
• Recall the unusual attitude recovery
Required Resources: a. SFC standard forms i. SFCJ E401-C172 Loading Data ii. SFCJ E402-C172 Weight and Balance Calculations iii. SFCJ E403-C172 Performance Takeoff & Landing Data iv. SFCJ E406-ATIS & clearance record
b. Jandakot Aerodrome chart
c. Perth Visual Terminal chart d. IFR hood Background Resources: a. Mass Brief 8 b. Aviation Theory Centre-Flight Training Manual c. SFC Flight Crew Training Manual d. Operation Manual i. A.1-A.6 ii. App B1- Standard Operation Procedure (SOP’s) e. C172R Pilot Operating Handbook f. Visual Flight Guide g. Day VFR Syllabus Required knowledge: (Question cadet before moving to next slide)
• Performance = Power + Attitude?
• Full panel IF selective radial scans? • Unusual Attitude Recovery? The G1000 Scanning
Attitude + Power = Performance
Straight and Level Climbing Descending Turning Climbing Turn Other Instruments There are other instruments that are required to be checked during the course of the flight.
These include: - Compass/DI alignment
- Engine Temp’s and Pressure’s, Ammeter
- Standby Instruments
After each complete scan of the instruments, choose one of
these extra instruments to check. Exercise 1. Conduct pre-flight check of instruments, suction and electrics
2. Disorientation demonstration
3. Conduct basic manoeuvres using Selective Radial Scan
4. Conduct Unusual Attitude recovery
Threat and Error Management Threat: Other aircraft Response: Instructor will maintain lookout while cadet under the hood; cadet to ask “clear” before any maneouvre Outcome: Appropriate traffic separation maintained
Error: Incorrect power setting during S&L
Response: Student to monitor engine RPM Outcome: Aircraft systems controlled accurately
UAS: Gain or loss of altitude during manoeuvres
Response: Student to maintain continuous selective radial scan; do not “fixate” Outcome: Aircraft performance controlled accurately Airmanship • Instrument checks to be thoroughly completed on the ground before every flight • Small and controlled movements of the controls to prevent disorientation and fatigue when flying under instruments • Ensure turns and climbs are visually cleared by the instructor before commencement
