Adverbs of frequency

Definition

Position

23
1. Definition of adverb of frequency:

We use some adverbs and other

expressions in present simple
sentences to describe how
frequently we do things. These
are called adverbs of
frequency.
2.1 Position of adverb of frequency in a sentence:

Example:
• I always remember to do my homework.
• He normally gets good marks in exams.

Subject + adverb + main verb

An adverb of frequency goes before a
main verb (except with To Be).
2.2 Position of adverb of frequency in a sentence:

Example:
• They are never pleased to see me.
• She isn't usually bad tempered.

Subject + to be + adverb
An adverb of frequency goes after the
verb To Be.
2.3 Position of adverb of frequency in a sentence:

Example:
• She can sometimes beat me in a race.
• I would hardly ever be unkind to someone.
• They might never see each other again.

Subject + auxiliary + adverb + main verb

When we use an auxiliary verb (have, will, must, might,
could, would, can, etc.), the adverb is placed between the
auxiliary and the main verb. This is also true for to be.
2.4 Position of adverb of frequency in a sentence:

Example:
• Occasionally, I like to eat Thai food.

We can also use the following adverbs at the start of a sentence:
Usually, normally, often, frequently, sometimes, occasionally

BUT we cannot use the following at the beginning of a sentence:

Always, seldom, rarely, hardly, ever, never.
2.5 Position of adverb of frequency in a sentence:

Example:
• She hardly ever comes to my parties.
• They never say 'thank you'.

We use hardly ever and never with positive, not negative
verbs

Example:
• Have you ever been to New Zealand?
• I haven't ever been to Switzerland.

We use ever in questions and negative statements:

The Secrets of a Long Life Track 4

The island of Okinawa in Japan has some of the oldest people in

the world. It’s famous for its high number of centenarians – men
and women who live beyond one hundred years of age. Some of
the reasons for their good health are that they:
• go fishing and eat what they catch.
• do a lot of gardening and grow their own fruit and
vegetables.
• go cycling and never drive when they can walk.
• often spend time with friends. They meet at people’s houses
and play games. An 89-year-old woman from Okinawa picks
seaweed. It’s part of her everyday food.
• rarely buy food from a supermarket. Photo by David McLain
• do regular exercise, go swimming and lead active lives.
