This document presents information on rainwater harvesting. It discusses that rainwater harvesting involves collecting and storing rainwater from surfaces like rooftops and land using simple techniques like jars or more complex techniques like underground dams. The basic components of a rainwater harvesting system include the catchment area, filters, storage, and groundwater recharge. The objectives of rainwater harvesting are calculating the catchment area, maximum rainwater quantity, and designing a storage tank. It is a sustainable water source and effective groundwater alternative, with collected water used for non-drinking domestic purposes.

Introduction : Rainwater harvesting is a technology used for collecting and storing rainwater from rooftop, the land surface or rock catchments using simple techniques such as jars and pots as well as more complex techniques such as underground check dams. Water harvesting is the activity of direct collection of rain water, which can be stored for direct use or can be recharged into ground water. The basic components of the rain water harvesting include Catchment area Filters storage Ground water recharge What is rainwater harvesting? The term ‘rainwater harvesting’ is usually taken to mean the immediate collection of rainwater running of Surfaces upon which it has fallen directly. This definition excludes run-off from land watersheds into streams, rivers, lakes, etc. Hence it is the catching of rainwater when it falls and storing to use during the non rainy season. Scope: The rainwater harvesting system is used to practice a sustainable source of water supply which is also an effective alternative to groundwater. The collected rainwater is used for storage purpose via small scale de-siltation and filtration chambers and that stored water is used for domestic purposes like gardening, cleaning and can be used for drinking purpose if the water is treated properly. Objectives: To calculate the catchment area (roof top). To calculate the quantity of maximum rain water. To design the storage tank for RWH system.
