Course Objectives
The objective of the courses is to expose the students to the different ways to think about
understanding organisations and approaches to managing the people who work within them.
The theories and models in this course look at the organisational context.

2. Integrative Managerial Issues: Managing in a Global Environment; Managing Diversity;
Managing Social Responsibility and Ethics; Managing Change and Innovation.
Unit II: Planning and Organising
3. Managers as Decision Makers; Foundations of Planning; Strategic Management; Planning
Tools and Techniques.
4. Organizing: Basic Organizational Design; Adaptive Organizational Design; Managing
Human Resources; Managing Your Career; Managing Teams.
Unit III: Leading
5. Leading: Understanding Individual Behaviour; Managers and Communication; Motivating
Employees; Managers as Leaders.
6. Key leadership theories and models; individual attributes of leadership; situational factors
that influence leadership; and transformational, instrumental, and transactional leadership.
Unit IV: Controlling
7. Introduction to Controlling; Managing Operations; Managing Entrepreneurial Ventures.
8. Introduction to Management Control System.

WHAT IS MANAGEMENT?
The art of getting things done from people so that the work is completed efficiently
and effectively.
The process of planning, organizing, leading and controlling the work of
organizational members, using all available resources to reach stated organizational
goals.
EFFICIENCY &
EFFECTIVENESS
Effectiveness is a broad concept. Effectiveness evaluates the extent to which multiple goals
—whether official or operative—are attained.
Efficiency is a more limited concept. Organizational efficiency is the amount of resources
used to produce a unit of output. It can be measured as the ratio of inputs to outputs.

Figureheads: Represent your team, build confidence, start with your image, behavior,
and reputation. Cultivate humility and empathy, learn how to set a good example at
work, and think about how to be a good role model.
Leader: How Good Are Your Leadership Skills? learn how to be an authentic leader,
so your team will respect you. Also, focus on improving your emotional intelligence
– this is an important skill for being an effective leader.
Liaison: To improve your liaison skills, work on your professional networking
techniques. Improve your Networking Skills.
IMPROVE YOUR
INFORMATIONAL ROLE
Monitor: learn how to gather information effectively and overcome information
overload. Also, use effective reading strategies, so that you can process material
quickly and thoroughly, and learn how to keep up-to-date with industry news.

Disseminator: To be a good disseminator you need to know how to share information


and outside views effectively, which means that good communication skills are vital.
Learn how to share organizational information with Team Briefings. Next, focus on
improving your writing skills.

Spokesperson: To be effective in this role, make sure that you know how to represent
your organization at a conference.

Entrepreneur: To improve here, build on your change management skills, and learn
what not to do when implementing change in your organization. You'll also need to work
on your problem solving and creativity skills, so that you can come up with new ideas,
and implement them successfully
Disturbance Handler: In this role, you need to excel at conflict resolution and know
how to handle team conflict. It's also helpful to be able to manage emotion in your team.
Resource Allocator: To improve as a resource allocator, learn how to manage a budget,
cut costs, and prioritize, so that you can make the best use of your resources.
Negotiator: Improve your negotiation skills by learning about Win-Win Negotiation.
You may also exercise role-playing – this technique can help you prepare for difficult
negotiations.
