TECHNICAL TERM OF STAIRCASE
• STEPS: It is the part of stairs which consists of riser and tread
• TREAD : the horizontal portion of a step upon which foot is placed
while ascending or descending . Size of tread should be at least 12
inch because size of our feet is about 8 to 10 inch and width 3 ft
minimum
• RISER : the vertical portion of a step providing support to tread.
Standard size of a riser is 6 inch . Size > 6 inch we will have pain in
knee and <6 inch we will uncomfortable while ascending or
descending in stairs or we may fell down
• FLIGHT : - a series of steps without any break or platform
- the size of riser and tread should of same size to
avoid discomfort in rhythm of going up and down
• LANDING: the resting platform between the two flights
• NOSING : it is the projecting part of a tread on the face of a riser

• BALUSTER : it is the vertical member of wood or metal supporting


the handrail
• HAND RAIL : horizontal member fixed on the top of series of
baluster. It can be made from timber or steel
• NEWEL POST : this the vertical member which is placed at the ends
of flight to connect handrail
