Class-X Reg.no.-00341 AIR ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT NECCESSITY OF GIVING CONTAINS LIFE LIFE OXYEN AND CARBON FORMS A DIOXIDE PROTECTIVE LAYER AROUND CONTROLSTHE EARTH TEMPERATURE DURING DAY AND HELP NIGHT OF WEATHER AND IN CHANGE CLIMATE PREVENTS THE SUN’S HARMFUL RAYS FROM REACHING THE WHAT IS AIR POLLUTION? The contamination of air by unwanted substances such as exhaust of vehicles , smoke from a factory chimney , fly ash from thermal power plants or natural phenomena like volcano , that have a harmful effect on both the living and non-living components of the environment, is called air pollution. WHAT ARE AIR POLLUTANTS? The substances that contaminate the air are called air pollutants.
The major air pollutants are those which are
produced in significant amounts and have health and other environmental hazard. AIR AND ITS MAJOR POLLUANTS Industries , vehicles increase in the population , and urbanization are some o the major factors causing air pollution. Some of the industries causing air pollution are thermal power plants, cement, steel, refineries, petro-chemical and mines. Dust storms in desert area. Smoke from forest fires and grass fires. Volcanic activity pour great amount of ash and toxic fumes into the atmosphere. P o l lu ta n ts j o r A i r 5 Ma M o n o x i d e 1.) Groun Ozone Carbon Monoxide •present in car exhaust •colorless, odorless •produced when carbon does not burn in fossil fuels •deprives body of O2 causing headaches, fatigue, and impaired vision Sulfur Dioxide •produced when coal and fuel oil are burnt •present in power plant exhaust •narrows the airway, causing wheezing and shortness of breath, especially in those with asthma Nitrogen Dioxide •reddish, brown gas •produced when nitric oxide combines with oxygen in the atmosphere •present in car exhaust and power plants •affects lungs and causes wheezing; increases chance of respiratory infection Particulate Matter •particles of different sizes and structures that are released into the atmosphere •present in many sources including fossil fuels, dust, smoke, fog, etc. •can build up in respiratory system •aggravates heart and lung disease; increases risk of respiratory infection Ground Level Ozone •at upper level, ozone shields Earth from sun’s harmful UV rays •at ground level, ozone is harmful pollutants •formed from car, power and chemical plant exhaust •irritate respiratory system and asthma; reduces lung function by inflaming and damaging lining of lungs THESE FIVE TOGETHER FORM SMOG •Combination of gases with water vapor and dust • Combination of words smoke and fog • Forms when heat and sunlight react gases (photochemical smog) • Occurs often with heavy traffic, high temperatures, and calm winds IT’S EFFECT •1st smog related deaths were in London in 1873; death toll 500 people; can you imagine how much worse the atmosphere is now?! •Limits visibility •Increases UV radiation •Yellow/black color over cities •Causes respiratory problems and bronchial related deaths EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION WHAT CAN WE DO? •Ride our bike
•Tell our friends and family about pollution
•Make sure our parents get pollution checks
on their cars
•Ride the school bus
•Learn more; stay up to date
•Join a group to stop pollution
•Encourage our parents to carpool to
work
•Switch off lights, fan, heat, etc. when
we leave the room We only have one world..... Do you want it like this? THANK YOU! THINK! WAIT! ACT!
