Purpose & Scope

Purpose
•To specify CHALLENGER Electrical isolation strategy and standards
for safe working practice on electrical Equipment and Power systems.
•To provide guidance and control for such work

Scope
•All electrical Equipment and systems isolation works in CHALLENER
Rig’s

•Mordjani Abdesslam
•Safety Engineer
Responsibilities

• TP:
 Ensure procedure is implemented
• Operating Authority (OA)
 Appointed by the TP.
 Responsible to ensure that all the steps of the
isolation/de-isolation are followed.
 Responsible for acceptance of permits.
• Applicant: ensures all permits are obtained
• Electrical isolation Authority Permit

•Mordjani Abdesslam
•Safety Engineer
General Procedures

• Always work under Permit to Work cover

• Executed by competent electrical isolation authority
• Use controlling isolation list for multiple isolations
• For long term electrical isolation
 further assess suitability, security and protection of
electrical terminals.
• When procedure includes isolation
 Perform JSA to confirm suitability

•Safety Engineer
Electrical isolation Standards

• Electrical Equipment
 Includes anything used or installed for use, to generate,
provide, transmit, transform, measure, convert, conduct,
distribute, store and use electricity.
• Extra low voltage
 Does not exceed 50 V AC rms between conductors
 Carried out by electrical isolation authority.
 Supplies to control panels to be isolated
 Secure isolation devices in a lockout box.
 Electrical isolation permit attached at the point of isolation.

•Mordjani Abdesslam
•Safety Engineer
Electrical isolation Standards

• Low voltage
 A voltage exceeding extra low voltage but not
exceeding1000 VAC or 1500 VDC between conductors.

 Generator prime mover if generator is involved

 Primary and secondary circuits isolated.
 Emergency supply circuits or battery also isolated.

•Mordjani Abdesslam
•Safety Engineer
Electrical isolation Standards

• High voltage
 A voltage exceeding 1000VAC or 1500 VDC.
 Requires competence and good knowledge of the system
 Equipment isolated and proven dead and earthed down.
 Carried out by Authorized electrical power person.
 At least two persons must be involved..

•Mordjani Abdesslam
•Safety Engineer
Electrical isolation Standard

• Isolation security
 Upper part of isolation permit fitted to the disconnected
wiring

 Personal Electrical isolation on Work order secured by

Electrical isolation authority padlock.

•Safety Engineer
Isolation Padlocks

• Numbered padlock for each site

• Owned by the Operating Authority
• When in use, key is displayed in isolation board in Tool
pusher office
• One box per site
• One key per padlock
• No Master key! Isolation Padlocks

• Loss of key??? 1 2
