Aluminum Pigment

Manufacturing
• In Ball mill, Al metal particles converted into flakes by cascading
action of the steel balls.
• Mill charge with powder Aluminum , stearic acid , white spirit
• Quality of product is determined by size of charge of steel balls.
Aluminum, white spirit and speed of rotation
• The pigment slurry from mill is filter pressed and the press cakes
containing 66-68% of metal.
• To obtain Al pigment in powder form, the white spirit is removed
under vaccum at as low temperature as it practice
Properties of Al pigment
• Particles are in form of small flakes
• Al pigment possess high metallic lustre
• Property of leading in organic media
• The particles orient themselves with their planes parallel to the
surface of paint film
Aluminum Paint
Aluminum paint is a coating material which made from a mixture of oil
varnish and aluminum Pigment in the form of thin flakes which overlap
in paint film
The aluminum flakes produce shiny metallic finish
• The resin helps the paint to flow and gives it durability and strength

Applications
Use to paint variety of metals and wood
• Also used in coating of oil and gas storage tanks and hot water pipes
Bronze Pigment
• Bronze Pigment covers a range of alloys of copper and zinc containing
small quantity of aluminum.
• The pale and brighter shades are marketed under name “gold powder”
Manufacturing
To expose the molten alloy to a jet of high pressure air which produce
nodules of various size
• These are converted into flakes by either a stamping process or ball mill
graded into size and finally polished
• The specific gravity of bronze pigment (8.3-8.7) considerably higher than
that of aluminum (2.7)
Bronze paint
In general it is considered that bronze powder in paint should leaf, ie
metallic flakes should orient themselves into the horizontal plane at the
surface of applied vehicle
• This leafing property, largely built into the particles themselves, produce a
thin sheet of highly polished metal at the surface of the applied paint
• It is responsible for lustre of gold paint
• Where the leafing is complete, uppermost surface of particles are not well
protected by vehicle and tarnish is adverse conditions may take place
• Overcoating with protective lacquer may be desirable
• The choice of resin and indeed solvents is of great importance all acidic
resins and highly polar solvents should be avoided
• For this purpose are often dispersed in straight polymer solutions such as
polyvinyl acetate or polystyrene

Applications
• Quickly drying bronze paint for finish of different surface metal, wood,
ceramics,etc
• Used for metal protection where thermal resistance upto 250 degree
celsius required
