Key points to remember
• Style and grammar: concern about citation style and grammatical
style (UK or USA)
• Bullet points: avoid them, use only when giving a list of examples that
require no further explanation
• Use of first person: not use ‘I, We’ except two specific cases (when
explaining your learning experience or narrating a story in qualitative
data analysis)
• Use of verb tense: better to use past tense as you are writing
something that has happened
• Length of sentence and paragraph: ensure that sentence introduces
only one idea, and paragraph groups around one idea. Use sub-
headings COM 3345 Online Teaching Material Prepared by Vilani Sachitra
• Logical structure: there should have a flow from one section to
another.
E.g
• In Introduction: you need to explain why you look at the literature,
what problem you want to solve
• In literature review: you need to explain what literature told, what
literature didn’t answer
• In discussion: you need to explain how findings of your research
relate to literature and make your conclusion regarding on it

Reference
• The location of the cited work of others must be accurately recorded in the
list (Reference list)
• Ensure that you cannot be accused of plagiarism
• Demonstrates that you are aware of the latest thinking in the subject
• Remember: ‘Everything you have cited in text appears in your reference list
and everything that appears in your reference list will have been cited in text’
• Reference styles:
• APA (American Psychological Association) - author/date based style, primarily used in
the USA
• Harvard - very similar to APA, the most well used referencing style in the UK and
Australia, and is encouraged for use with the humanities.
• Chicago - widely used for history and economics
