Data and Information

Prepared by: Shuleene M. Andrada

At the end of this presentation, you should be able to:
 Differentiate the categories of computers
 Identify examples under each category of computers
 Distinguish data from information
Categories of Computer
A. Supercomputers
 they have the most capable processing power of
its time
 modern ones run hundreds of thousands of
processors, capable of computing quadrillions of
calculations in just a few nanoseconds
 They are used in computational science to
calculate and carry out complex tasks such as
modeling molecular structures, weather
forecasting, and in the field of quantum
mechanics among others.

A processor, or "microprocessor," is a small chip that resides in computers
and other electronic devices. Its basic job is to receive input and provide the
appropriate output.
Categories of Computer
B. Mainframe Computers
 Like supercomputers, mainframe computers are
huge, towering machines with lots of processing
power.
 They are mostly used by corporations, government
agencies, and banks – organizations that need a
way to store large quantities of information.
 They are not the same as supercomputers because
the processing capabilities of mainframe computers
are measured in MIPS, or millions of instructions
per second. Supercomputers, on the other hand, are
measured in FLOPS, or floating point operations

per seconds.
Categories of Computer
C. Minicomputers
 It is a multiprocessing machine that can support
up to about 200 users at the same time. A server
is an example of this.
 Despite their name, a minicomputer is not a
personal computer like the desktop machine you
might have at home or work. They are much
larger than that.
 Minicomputers have become pretty much
obsolete.

Categories of Computer
D. Microcomputers/Personal Computers
 Microcomputers are smaller computers that run
on microprocessors in their central processing
units.
 They’re meant for everyday uses usually at
work and at home. https://www.

Categories of Computer
E. Mobile Computers
 They are meant to be carried around and taken from place to place.
Example:

Mobile Gaming Devices (Handheld Game Consoles)
These gadgets are built for gaming because they have better battery life, actual buttons, and tons of games
that can keep a person occupied for hours.

Examples:
Nintendo Switch Game & Watch
DATA AND INFORMATION

 Computer data is information processed or stored by a

computer. This information may be in the form of text
documents, images, audio clips, software programs, or
other types of data.
 Computer data may be processed by the computer's CPU
and is stored in files and folders on the computer's hard
disk.
 It is a bunch of ones and zeros, known as binary data.
Because all computer data is in binary format, it can be
created, processed, saved, and stored digitally.
 This allows data to be transferred from one computer to
another using a network connection or various media
devices. It also does not deteriorate over time or lose
quality after being used multiple times.
