HP FutureSmart firmware

New firmware upgrade methods

Remote firmware upgrade methods

HP FutureSmart firmware features three interactive remote firmware upgrade (RFU)
methods:
1. Embedded Web Server (EWS)
2. Walk-up USB storage accessory
a. Pre-boot menu
b. Standard control panel > Device Maintenance application
3. Web Services – Web Jetadmin

Note
Web Jetadmin provides support for HP FutureSmart firmware upgrades;
however this functionality will not be available until November 1.

HP no longer supports these legacy firmware upgrade methods: FTP, LPR, and Port
9100.

Where to get the latest firmware

Prior to the release of the product, contact the Technical Marketing Engineers
responsible for this product.
The Technical Marketing Engineers can provide an FTP link with the files which are
approximately 180MB.
Once the product has released, the firmware will be on www.hp.com under the
Support and Drivers download link.

Determining the current version of firmware

To determine the current version of firmware a product is running, print a
configuration page before performing a firmware upgrade.

Printing a configuration page

1. From the product touch-screen control panel, select Administration.
2. Select Reports.
3. From Configuration/Status Pages, place a checkmark next to Configuration
Page.
4. Select Print.

HP Restricted 1
Firmware datecode and firmware revision
Once the Configuration Page has printed, locate the Firmware Datecode and
Firmware Revision in the Device Information section. These numbers look like this:
 Firmware Datecode: 20100831
 Firmware Revision: 103067_104746

Active and repository firmware locations

The HP FutureSmart firmware bundle consists of multiple segments. The main
components are the Windows CE Operating System and the printer and peripheral
firmware files.
There are two primary locations on the disk drive where the firmware components
reside:
 Active
The active locations are where the operating system and firmware are
currently running.
The firmware in the active locations contains the base firmware and all of
the customer settings, PINs, and passwords.
 Repository
The repository is the recovery location.
The firmware in the repository contains the firmware base, but does not
include any customer settings.
During a system boot-up, both the active and the repository areas on the hard drive
are verified. If an active location is damaged, a Partial Clean must be performed.
After a Partial Clean has completed, selecting Continue from the pre-boot menu
initializes the boot-up sequence. As the product boots to Ready, the product will
automatically copy over the OS and firmware files from the repository on the hard
drive.
If both the active and repository locations are damaged, or if a Clean Disk was
performed, then active and repository locations are lost and the product displays a
99.09.67 error. This requires uploading firmware in order for the product to function
again.

Caution
HP does not recommend performing a Clean Disk unless an error occurs and the
product-specific Service Manual recommends this resolution. Clean Disk performs
a disk initialization for the entire disk, including the operating system, firmware
files, third-party solutions, and customer-defined settings. This renders the product
inoperable and firmware must be reloaded.

How to perform firmware upgrades
The HP FutureSmart firmware bundle is a .bdl file, and this file type requires an
interactive upgrade method, such as a USB storage accessory, the EWS, or Web
Jetadmin.
Legacy firmware upgrading methods such as FTP, LPR, and Port 9100 are not
currently supported with HP FutureSmart firmware.
When performing a firmware upgrade, verify the product can boot to either a Ready
state or the pre-boot menu.

Upgrading firmware through the EWS

1. Open an internet browser window and enter the IP address of the product in the
URL field.
2. On the Troubleshooting tab, select Firmware Upgrade from the Troubleshooting
menu.

a. A non-blank administrator password must be set in order to perform an RFU

through the EWS.

b. To set the administrator password, click the Security tab and then set the
Local Administrator Password. At the bottom of the page, select Apply.
3. Browse to the firmware file location.

4. Verify the correct firmware version and select Install.

5. Do not close the browser window or interrupt communication until the EWS
displays the confirmation page.

6. Select Restart Now. Once the product is in a Ready state, print a configuration
page to verify the new firmware is installed.

Upgrading firmware using the walk-up USB port through the standard
control-panel menu
1. Locate the firmware files from the product Support and Drivers download link on
www.hp.com.
2. Uncompress the files. The uncompressed files reveal a xxxxxxx.bdl file.
3. Copy the xxxxxxx.bdl file to a USB storage accessory root directory.

4. On the control panel of the product, select Device Maintenance.

5. Select USB Firmware Upgrade.

6. Insert the USB storage accessory containing the firmware files into the walk-up
USB port on the front of the product and press OK.

7. If the USB storage accessory contains multiple xxxxxxx.bdl files, locate the
correct version and press OK.

Selecting Details displays the current firmware on the product and the
firmware bundle on the USB storage accessory. This indicates whether the
firmware on the USB storage accessory is an older or newer firmware
version than what is currently installed on the product. Select OK to close
the message.

8. A message to upgrade to an older, newer, or reinstall the same revision of

firmware appears on the control panel. If the version is correct, select Upgrade.

Do not interrupt the updating process. When the firmware upgrade is

complete, the product automatically reboots.

9. Once the product is in a Ready state, print a configuration page to verify the
new firmware is installed.

Note
The EWS is different from what service personnel might be familiar with in
legacy firmware. Become familiar with the new EWS format.

Upgrading firmware using the walk-up USB port through the pre-boot menu
1. Locate the firmware files from the product Support and Drivers download link on
www.hp.com.
2. Uncompress the files. The uncompressed files reveal a xxxxxxx.bdl file.
3. Copy the xxxxxxx.bdl file to a USB storage accessory root directory.
4. Turn on the product.
5. As the product boots up, watch these three indicator lights on the control panel:
Ready
Data
Attention
6. Press Stop when all three of these indicator lights are solid. The pre-boot menu
appears.
7. Using the hard-coded keys, scroll to the Administrator menu and select OK.

8. Scroll to the Download menu and select OK.

9. Insert the USB storage accessory containing the firmware files into the walk-up
USB port on the front of the product and select OK.

If a No USB Thumbdrive files found message is displayed on the control
panel, insert the USB storage accessory in the external USB port on the
formatter.
10. Scroll to the USB Thumbdrive menu and select OK.

11. If the USB storage accessory contains multiple xxxxxxx.bdl files, locate the
correct version and select OK.
