DATA

PROCESSING
 Computers are basically designed to process data,
provide useful information, and solve problems.
 To understand how these tasks are performed by
the computers, it is important to study the data
processing cycle, the basic computer operations,
its components and their functions, its capabilities
and limitations
TERMS AND DEFINITION
 Data Processing – is a procedure or operation
wherein data are manipulated to procedure the
required information to be used in planning and
decision making.
 The processing of data through the use of
computers is referred to as ELECTRONIC DATA
PROCESSING or EDP. To facilitate learning
these concepts, let us study some of the following
terms.
 DATA – are collection of facts in the form of text,
numbers, special symbol or characters, audio,
video, and images. They are raw data and may be
useful or not. It may not have any sense and may
not be important to the user.
 INFORMATION – is the processed data. They are
organized and meaningful for the user. These data
are accurate, complete, usable, and timely.
DATA PROCESSING CYCLE
 The data processing cycle represents the sequence
of processing performed by a computer. The
sequence of steps is performed repeatedly by a
computer in the execution of a program.
Data processing cycle involves three
phases:
 Input – consists of sets of data that need to be
processed, usually entered into the computer.
 Process – consists of manipulation or
transformation of data done by the computer to
generate results.
 Output – is the result displayed by the computer or
the processed data called information.

TYPES OF DATA PROCESSING
 Manual. it is a system wherein all operations, from
gathering of data to output operation, are performed by
man without the aid of any machine. An example is
counting with the fingers or producing a handwritten letter.
 Key-driven. This is a system wherein the bulk of work is
performed by man and some assistance is provided by a
machine such as an abacus, calculator, adding machine, or
typewriter.
 EDP (Electronic Data Processing). It is a system which
the majority of the operations are processed by the
computer. This system is also referred to as
INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (IT).
Uses of Data Processing
 Is used extensively in business, engineering and
science. In business, data processing is used in
sales analysis, and in the processing of bank and
credit account statements. In engineering, it is
used in the processing of seismic data for oil and
mineral exploration, and in the analysis of new
product designs.
