Computer Network
A computer
network is a Characteristics of a Computer Network
system in which • Share resources from one computer to
multiple another.
• Create files and store them in one
computers are computer, access those files from the
connected to each other computer(s) connected over the
other to share network.
• Connect a printer, scanner, or a fax
information and machine to one computer within the
resources. network and let other computers of the
network use the machines available over
the network.

LAN
Types of Network based on Geographical Area
1. Local Area Network (LAN)
LANs connect groups of computers and low-voltage devices
together across short distances (within a building or between a
group of two or three buildings near each other) to share
information and resources.
2. Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN)
Functioning like a LAN, WLANs make use of
wireless network technology, such as Wi-Fi. Typically seen in the
same types of applications as LANs, these types of networks
don’t require that devices rely on physical cables to connect to
the network.
Types of Network based on Geographical Area
3. Campus Area Network (CAN)
Larger than LANs, but smaller than metropolitan area networks,
these types of networks are typically seen in universities, large K-
12 school districts or small businesses.
4. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
These types of networks are larger than LANs but smaller than
WANs. MANs span an entire geographic area (typically a town or
city).
5. Wide Area Network (WAN)
WAN connects computers together across longer physical
distances. The Internet is the most basic example of a WAN,
connecting all computers together around the world.
NETWORK TOPOLOGY
 defines the physical arrangement or shape
used to connect computers and devices on
local area network
Types of Network Topology

BUS Topology
It is a topology for a Local Area Network (LAN) in which
all the nodes are connected to a single cable. The cable to
which the nodes connect is called a "backbone".

HOST

HOST Concentrator

STAR Topology
In this topology all stations are connected or wired into a
central wiring connector or network device (hub or switch) that
route message to the appropriate computer.

RING Topology
A network topology wherein all computers are connected
in a closed loop. Each device connected to the network,
receives data in a circular fashion.

NET or MESH Topology

In this topology every computer in a network is connected
to every other computer by its own point communication
circuit. This kind of topology is seldom used because of
extremely high cost.
Types of Network Topology

HYBRID Topology
This topology is a kind of combination of principles of two
or more different networking topologies.
