INTRODUCTION
• Superfinishing is an operation using abrasive bonded
particles in a particular way to produce extremely high
quality of surface finish.
• A very thin layer of metal (0.005 to 0.02mm) is removed
in superfinishing.
• Process is applied to both external and internal surfaces,
made from steel, cast iron and other non ferrous metals
which ground or precious turned.
INTRODUCTION
• Special purpose machines are used for superfinishing
process. Other ordinary machines used in particular are
lathe machines.
• Common abrasive used are silicon carbide, aluminium
oxide, cubic boron nitride, powdered diamond, etc.
• Advantages of superfinishing include: increasing part
life, decreasing wear, closer tolerances, higher load
bearing surfaces, better sealing capabilities.
• Application include hydraulic cylinders, fuel injector
components, camshaft lobes, etc.
TUMBLING
• Tumbling is the least inexpensive way for removing rust
and scales from relatively small metal parts.
• This process is accomplished by placing workpieces in a
drum or barrel with abrasive materials.
• The abrasive material used are sand, granite, chips, or
aluminium oxide pellets.
• The rotation of barrel at low rpm causes fine cutting
action between workpiece and abrasive causing removal
of scales.
TUMBLING
HONING
• Honing is a grinding or abrasive process mostly for
finishing round holes by means of bonded abrasive
stones called hones.
• Honing process can remove material as much 3mm to
0.25mm.
• It is done to correct roundness, taper, tool marks, axial
distortion etc.
• It's consist of a honing tool (stone) which rotates and
reciprocates inside a stationary workpiece. Abrasive
action between tool and work piece takes place.
HONING
• Honing stone are made from sulphur, resin or wax to
improve cutting action.
• Coolant are essential to remove the flush away and keep
the work temperature under control.
• Major application of honing is in internal bores of IC
engine.
HONING
METAL SPRAYING
• Metal Spraying is intended to confer some physical
property on the surface and also to improve surface
appearance.
• Metal spraying is done by melting a metal a metal in
oxy-gas flame and blowing it from the nozzle of spray
gun.
• Metal is supplied in the form of wires through power
rollers to flame or in a powdered form.
• The process uses compressed gas to atomized and
project the molten metal, assuring good adhesion.
METAL SPRAYING
OXIDISING
• Oxidizing refers to the removal of surface oxides and
scale from metals (mostly aluminium) by acid solution.
• Common solutions include sulphuric or hydrochloric
acids and water.
• Before oxidizing parts must be perfectly cleaned and
after the process they need to be rinsed by alkaline
rinse, to avoid corrosion.
• It's mostly done on rolled shapes, wires, sheets, casted
components, etc.
