INTRODUCTION
 Carries axial compression- Majority
 In RCC building- column
 In steel structure-stanchion
 In truss- strut
 In crane- boom
3 8/11/21

Type of sections used

 Rolled steel sections and built up sections
 Rolled steel sections- readily available in market
 Built up sections- fabricated depending upon the
need

Failure modes
 Squashing
 Overall flexural buckling
 Local buckling
 Torsional buckling
 Flexural torsional buckling
7 8/11/21

Squashing
 Entirecross section gets yielded
 Occurs in short, stocky columns
 Buckling is negligible
8 8/11/21

Flexural buckling
 Failure due to excessive deflection in lateral
direction
 In slender columns
 Weaker principle axis
9 8/11/21

Local buckling
 Some portions of structure may be weak
 Buckling occurs at that point
10 8/11/21

Torsional buckling
 Due to torsional moment
 Gets twisted about shear center
11 8/11/21

Flexural torsional buckling

 Combination of both flexural and torsional
moment
 Common in asymmetric sections
