moment = F x d
Moments can be either CLOCKWISE
or ANTICLOCKWISE
The size of the turning effect caused
by a force depends on two factors.
What are they?
moment = F x d
= 80N x 25cm
= 80N x 0.25m
= 20 Nm CLOCKWISE

Balanced Moments create an
Equilibrium Situation
The principle of moments
When an object is not turning (e.g. balanced):
The total clockwise moment equals the total
anticlockwise moment. The object is in
Rotational equilibrium
When there is no
resultant moment on
an object (when
anticlockwise
moments = clockwise
moments) we say the
object is in rotational
equilibrium.

Centre of gravity
The centre of gravity of a body is that point at which
the weight of the body acts.
Centre of gravity is
also sometimes called
centre of mass.
centres of gravity of regular shapes
If suspended, a body will come to rest with its centre
of gravity directly below the point of suspension.

Measure the mass of the broom (M) using digital
balance
Set of hanging masses(m)
When the broom is balanced measure the distance
(d) from the hanging masses to the pivot
Calculate the distance x from the pivot to to the
centre of gravity of the broom using principleof
moments .
