Methods of Storytelling

By: Professor F
What is storytelling?
• Storytelling is the interactive art of using words and actions to reveal
the elements and images of a story while encouraging the listener's
imagination.
• Storytelling is an ancient art form and a valuable form of human
expression.
• Because story is essential to so many art forms, however, the word
“storytelling” is often used in many ways.
Forms of storytelling:
There are many forms of storytelling:
• Oral
• Digital
• Written
The medium used is often reflective of the people telling the stories.
Methods of storytelling help answer the following
questions:

• How do you tell a story?

• Where do you start?

1. Design
• Sometimes, a story doesn't require words.

• Just look at cartoons - animation that gives life to an image and can
tell a story without spoken text.

• A beautiful series of images, perfectly detailed, can tell the story on

their own and engage the reader.
2. Interactivity
• Get your audience involved.
• Musical instruments, sound effects - whatever it takes, allow your
audience to interact with the story.
• Allow them to visualize the story.
3. Personalization

• Adding a little bit of personal detail to the tale completely engrosses

and engages the audience because, suddenly, they're a part of it.
4. Sensory Skills

• While telling a story be sure to engage the audience with all their 5
senses including audio and helping them to visualize what is going on
in the story.
