why do you need to summarize?
To determine the important idea/ideas.
To talk about author’s purpose or the key messages
in the text.
To use your own words to check understanding
• If you don’t use your own words it simply means you don’t understand the text
Criteria of writing a good summary
1. You must ensure that you have included all the IMPORTANT
details according to the TITLE!
2. You only include the main ideas (main points).
3. It should be organised! Remember to use appropriate sequence
connectors when organising the points,
4. Be mindful of the spelling, punctuation, capitalisation.
