INTRODUCTION
Knowing to whom you are talking to is very
important before you actually choose the
topic for your presentation.
PROCESS OF PREPARING THE SPEECH
1. Audience Centeredness
Message must be meaningful to the audience
Adapt your message to the needs of the audience
Questions to bear in mind while preparing your
speech
- To whom am I speaking?
- What do I want to know, believe or do as a
result of my speech?
- What is the effective way of composing and
presenting my speech to accomplish that aim?
Be sensitive to your audience responds and
change your speech accordingly
2. The Psychology Of An Audience
They choose to listen or not
Interpretation differs from one individual to
another
People want to hear something which is
meaningful to them
People are egocentric – they pay closest
attention to messages that effect their lives,
values or well being.
3. Demographic Audience Analysis
In order to analyze your audiences, look for
these observable traits:
1. Age
2. Gender
3. Religious orientation
4. Racial, ethnic
5. Cultural background
4. Situational Audience Analysis
Size of an audience
Physical setting – room temperature, size
Disposition towards the topic – interest,
knowledge, attitude
Disposition towards the speaker
Disposition towards the occasion
CHOOSING A TOPIC AND PURPOSE
The first step in speech making is choosing a
topic.
It is determined by the occasion, audience
and the speaker’s qualification
For classroom presentation, choose subject
you know a lot about and subject that
interest you.
Your audience – you have to consider the
level of background your audience has, their
belief, age, gender, and size.
Yourself – you have to consider your beliefs
and interests.
CONT…
Your time – you have to consider the length
of the assigned speech, as well as how much
preparation time is available to you.
The occasion – what’s the occasion?? Is it
somebody’s wedding?? Does a group of
whinny kindergarten students want you to
talk about dolphin?? This is an important
thing to consider.
Your purpose – (here we go again) you have
to consider what your purpose is. If you’re
trying to get people to clean up the highway,
don’t talk about how many cars drive on it.
If you have problem picking a topic, try
this procedures:
Make inventory of your hobbies, interest,
experiences and others
Brainstorming techniques, write all your
ideas on a piece of paper.
Browse through a reference books for ideas.
