WH questions
The interrogative adverbs are
used to ask more details than
simply ‘yes’ or ‘no’. They are used
to ask some new information or
fact. There are different kinds of
interrogative adverbs.
QUI= who
Qui
The next interrogative word that we will study is qui.
Qui is an interrogative pronoun that is
always used for asking a question regarding a person.
In English, qui can be translated as
‘who’. In the text, qui is used in the following question:
- Qui est-il ? (Who is he ?)
Que = what
Que is an interrogative pronoun that refers to an
object when used in an interrogation. In
English, que can be translated as ‘what’. In the text,
que is used in the following question:
- Juliette, que fais-tu? (Juliette, what are you
doing?)
Que + est-ce-que + subject + verb.
The elision must take place between que and est-ce-
que, hence it changes to
qu’est-ce-que.( Que + verb + subject)

Quand - when?

À quelle heure - at what


time

Combien de - How much/ how many?

Comment - How?

Pourquoi - why ?/ what for


Examples:

pourquoi tu pleures ?
tu sais pourquoi ta soeur
pleure ?
Je ne sais pas pourquoi elle pleure
Pourquoi tu n’invites pas tes voisins pour ton
anniversaire? = Why don’t you
invite your neighbours for your birthday

Combien + est-ce-que + subject + verb
comment + subject + verb
Où + est-ce-que +subject + verb
Inversion

Comment + verb +subject
Examples:

Quand est ton anniversaire?


Quand tu arrives?
Combien de livres veut-il?
Où habites- tu?
Quand est-ce qu’on rentre ?
Comment tu sais tout ça, Maman ?
Combien coûte cette jupe ?(How much does this skirt
cost)
Comment est-ce-que Charlotte prépare le gâteau ?

 quel = ( what/ which) Masculine singular nouns
 quelle = (what/which)feminine singular noun
 quels = ( what/ which) masculine plural nouns
 quelles =(what/ which) feminine plural nouns
Examples:
 Quel livre tu lis?
 which book do you read?
 livre is masculine, so we need to place ‘quel’
Quelle chemise portez-vous?
 which shirt do you wear?
 chemise is feminine, so we must place ‘quelle’
Quelles robes achètes- tu?
Which dresses do you buy?
Quel est votre nom?
What is your name?
Quelle est la question?

The only verb that separates from its noun is être.
