INTRODUCTION ON

SATELLITES
What is a SATELLITE?

ANS:
any object that is orbiting
around another primary object.

MFI
Types of Satellite

 Natural Satellite
 Artificial Satellite-
any object purposely placed
into orbit around Earth, other
planets, or the Sun

MFI
Types of Artificial Satellite

1. scientific research
2. weather
3. communications
4. navigation
5. Earth observing, and
6. military

MFI
Communication

 The Syncom 4 communications

satellite was launched from the
space shuttle Discovery.
 Modern communications satellites
receive, amplify, and retransmit
information back to earth,
providing television, telefax,
telephone, radio, and digital data
links around the world.

MFI
Navigation Satellites

 Helps to locate the position of

ships, aircraft, and even
automobiles that are equipped with
special radio receivers.

 sends continuous radio signals to

Earth

MFI
Introduction on Satellites

How Satellites go into space?

1. Rocket must reached at an altitude of at least 200km

(speed of 29,000 kph)
2. Enter into LEO (low earth orbit) ~ 700km altitude
3. Satellite will separate from rocket and continue its orbit.

Introduction on Satellites

Operations in Space
 Generate its own power
 Able to orient itself
 Dissipate heat
 Deal with cosmic radiation
 Protect itself from micro meteors

MFI
Where do satellites get
Power?

Electricity comes from solar

panels with a battery back up
for when the solar panels do
not receive sunlight

MFI
How do satellite cool itself?

A satellite uses radiation to dissipate heat as there are no

other bodies around and no air to cool them. It radiates the
heat energy through louvered panels

MFI
MFI
How do they oriented?

A satellite creates its own reference through the use

of spinning wheels. A spinning wheel has the property
that the axis maintains it position due to the centrifugal
force as it spins.

MFI
How do satellite protect itself?

 Satellite shields all electronic equipment especially

computer circuit from small meteors colliding for
it can affect its life span

Satellite Disposal Pag na Fall
 Satellite end up their missions
Out na,
 Fall out from its orbit and and burn in the Bumitiw
atmosphere because of friction from
atmosphere
kana!!
 Others stay in orbit

MFI
Factors that affect satellite breakup and debris survivability

 Initial speed
 Flight path angle
 Melting temperature of components

2. Conduct a group discussion (be be the same to each member
sure that every member
understand each topic) of the group. (50 pts.)
3. Activity Proper: The instructor
may call any member(s) of the (DAMAY DAMAY NA TO!!!)
group to discuss the assigned
topic in front.
