Purpose of the training NSH
From the point of view of the individual employee, these are the main
aims of the training.
Improve the individuals level of awareness.

Increase an individual’s skill in one or more areas of expertise.

Increase an individual’s motivation to perform their job well.

To equip personals to assess the risk and act proactively rather than do
Fire fighting or Reactive

To share/get the learned lesson and avoid the same mistakes of the past

To made aware the general construction practices of NSH for achieving

consistent performance across the company

CABLE
TRENCH
PREPARATION

1
CABLE TRENCH PREPARATION NSH
Trench Excavation Before proceeding with actual work of trench excavation,
following preparations should be completed:

A. Review the cable route drawings, layout drawings, digging permit, and inspect
the cable route from end to end.
B. Decide locating where cable drums shall be unloaded at site, keeping in view
the actual cable lengths on drums.
C. Keep ready the necessary number of night warning lamps, stands, wooden/steel
bridges and barricades and make sure the adequate PPE.
D. Arrange necessary manpower keeping in view the work schedule and expiry date
of excavation permit.

CABLE TRENCH PREPARATION NSH
Below Grade Elevation - Minimum depth of trench for direct buried cables shall be as
follows: SAES-P-104:
• 610 mm (2'-0") 600 V and below
• 920 mm (3'-0") Over 600 V to 35 kV
• 1070 mm (3'-6") Over 35 KV.
- Below Grade Elevation - Minimum depth of trench for direct buried PVC-coated galvanized
rigid steel conduit shall be as follows:
• 1015 mm (3'-4") under roads where GI-1021.000 applies
• 610 mm (2'-0") under roads
• 460 mm (1'-6") all other installations.
- Direct Buried Cable / Conduit Trench - A minimum of 150 mm (6 inches) of dry sand
shall be installed from bottom of trench to bottom of cable or conduit.
- Direct Buried Cable / Conduit Trench - Minimum width of trench at the bottom shall be
300 mm (12 inches).

CABLE PULLING & LAYING

2
CABLE PULLING & LAYING NSH
. Use power-assisted cable pulling equipment for long or difficult pull or pulls with several
transitions
. Pull the cable at constant velocity not less than 15 feet per minute.
. Do not pull cable with a vehicle.
. Minimum bending radius for all cable is 12 times the diameter of the individually
conductors.
. The spare capacity is in addition to the installed 20% spare cabling.
. The cable should be fed into the duct run from the end nearest the bend.
.The cable pulling attachment to prevent cable rotation during pulling operations.

9
CABLE PULLING & LAYING NSH
. Use a torque-balance pulling line or an adequately sized swivel joint between
pulling line
. The maximum pulling tension for copper conductor should not exceed 0.008
times circular-mil area.
. Ensure adequate clearance between duct or conduit diameter and cable
diameter.
. The percent fill requirement shall not be exceeded.
. The bend of the cable shall be limited to minimized cable damage.
. The cables outside the building shall be direct buried for a distance of at least
2 meters

CABLE SEPARATION

3
CABLE SEPARATION NSH
Direct Buried Cable / Conduit Trench - A minimum of 150 mm (6 inches) of dry sand shall be
installed from bottom of trench to bottom of cable or conduit (as a cushion). SAES-104
-Minimum separation (above or below ground) between a power cable operating at 1000 V or
above, up to 34.5 kV, and a parallel or crossing power or control cable operating at less than
1000 V, shall be 300 mm, except when the medium voltage cable is armored or metal clad or
is installed in rigid steel conduit, or is installed in aluminum cable tray and is separated from
the lower voltage cable by solid fixed metallic barriers, or when the low voltage cable is
installed in rigid steel conduit. Minimum separation requirements between a power and any
communication conductors shall be in accordance with SAES-T-911 or SAES-T-928.

15
CABLE SEPARATION NSH
Signal Segregation, Separation, and Noise Reduction
14.1 Signal Segregation
14.1.1 Signal wiring (instrumentation cable) shall be categorized with noise susceptibility
levels (NSL) of ‘1’ or ‘2.’
14.1.1.1 Level 1 – High to Medium Susceptibility: Analog signals of less than 50 V and
discrete instrument signals of less than 30 V.
Signal Types
a) Foundation Fieldbus
b) 4-20 mA and 4-20 mA with HART
c) RTD
d) Thermocouple
e) Millivolt/Pulse
f) Discrete input & output signals, e.g., pressure switches, valve position limit switches,
indicating lights, relays, solenoids, etc.
16
CABLE SEPARATION NSH
g) All wiring connected to components associated with sensitive analog
hardware (e.g., strain gauge)
h) Copper data links (RS-232 or 485)

14.1.1.2 Level 2 – Low Susceptibility: Switching signals greater than 30 V, analog signals
greater than 50 V, and 120-240 AC feeders less than 20 amps.
Signal Types
a) Discrete input & output DC signals, e.g., pressure switches, valve position limit
switches, indicating lights, relays, solenoids, etc.
b) Discrete input & output AC signals, e.g., pressure switches, valve position limit
switches, indicating lights, relays, solenoids, etc.
c) 120-240 AC feeders of less than 20 amps.
14.1.1.3 Level 3 – Power: AC and DC buses of 0-1,000 V with currents of 20-800 amps.
