SECTOR ANTENNA

SECTOR ANTENNA
• A sector antenna is a type of semi-directional microwave
antenna with a sector-shaped radiation pattern.
• Sector antennas consist of an array of dipoles placed in front of
a shaped reflector.
• They are usually installed in what is known as a sectorized
array.
• In a sectorized array, antennas are mounted back to back to
provide full 360 degree coverage.
• Beam-width for a sector antenna can be between 60 to 180
degrees with 120 degrees being typical.
• They are long narrow antennas with high gains.
CONSTRUCTION
• They are built from an array of dipoles placed in front of a
shaped reflector.
• The size and shape of the reflector determines the performance
of these antennas to a large extent.
• They operate in the frequency range of 2.4GHz to 5.85GHz.
USAGE
• Sector antennas are used extensively for cellular
communication. The largest use of these antennas is for cell
phone base-station sites.
• They are also used for other types of mobile communications,
for example in Wi-Fi networks.
• Used to transmit wireless signals to multiple clients in network
or in point to multi-point base station.
• To increase or widen the coverage area, and thus the number of
served clients, several sector antennas are installed on the same
supporting structure, e.g. towers.
RADIATION PATTERN
LIMITATIONS
• When deploying sectors, there can be several nulls in the
elevation plane.
• When antennas are mounted high in the air on towers, these
nulls can affect the performance of the system.
