HABIT 6: SYNERGY
WHAT IS
Habit 6: SYNERGY

The term synergy is derived from the Greek word ‘SYNERGIA’

Which means ‘ Working Together’

“Synergy is the interaction /corporation of two or more agents to produce a combined effect greater than the
sum of their individual or separate effect.”
SYNERGY IN NATURE?

‘It is the combined effect of two or more

organisms to generate a result greater than
each would achieve individually’…..
For example : A BEE
‘If u plant the two plants close together the roots comingle and improve the quality of soil
so both plants will grow better than if they were separated’
EXAMPLE

Like if you are playing baseball

in order to be a good team you
need everyone the pitcher, the
catcher, infielder and outfielder
without the catcher the pitcher
would be just throwing it at the
wall
What we understand about synergy……….
SYNERGISTIC COMMUNICATION

• Opens your mind and heart to new possibilities

• Clarifies your goals and discovers better ones by fulfilling them

ADVANTAGES OF SYNERGISTIC COMMUNICATION

• Cooperation among individuals begins to flow easily

• Inspiration level of each individual rises up

• It helps to broaden and improve communication by discussion or

exchange of ideas at a larger whole among the individuals

• Last but not the least, it increases individual’s efficiency by integrating

the skills and ideas to create a innovative goal
ILUSTRATION OF HOW CLOSELY TRUST & COOPERATION RELATES TO
BETTER SYNERGY IN COMMUNICATION
LOWEST LEVEL OF COMMUNICATION
• This level of communication is characterized by defectiveness,
protectiveness and often legalistic language due to low trust
situations

• Such type of communication either produces Win/Lose or Lose/Lose

MIDDLE LEVEL OF COMMUNICATION
• This level of communication is characterized as respectful
communication

• Fairly mature people interact here but they want to avoid the
possibility of ugly confrontations so they communicate politely but
not empathically

• Such type of communication produces a low form of Win/Win due to

low creativity and synergy
HIGH LEVEL OF COMMUNICATION
• This level of communication is characterized as Synergistic
Communication

• Synergy means that 1+1 may equal 8, 16 or even 1600

• The synergistic position of high trust produces solutions better than

any originally proposed and all parties know it
Lorii Myers Gets to the Point

There is no stronger force in the world than a group of people with a

common goal. By ourselves we are not able to accomplish much, but as a
group there is no limit to what we can achieve. Never underestimate the
power of a team
TYPES OF SYNERGISTIC
COMMUNICATION

• Synergy in Classroom

• Synergy in Business
TYPES OF SYNERGISTIC
COMMUNICATION

Synergy in class room happens when teacher and

students are open; the principle of whole being greater
then some of its part.

Synergy in class rooms happens;

• When teachers are thinking

• When students are learning
• When teacher is open to learn from students
SYNERGY IN CLASSROOM

Synergy in the class room required many things;

• Trust between instructor and each of his or her students
• Trust amongst student ,one to another
• Team work
• Good communication skills
• A common goal
• Motivation to achieve that goal

YOU CAN DO THINGS I CANNOT ;
TOGETHER WE CAN DO GREAT THINGS”
MOTHER TERESA
SYNERGY IN BUSINESS

• In business environment ,synergy

occurs when two or more business
or recourses come together to
make a greater impact than they
would separately.
EXAMPLES OF SYNERGY IN BUSINESS

NEGATIVE SYNERGY

“The whole is less than the sum of it’s

parts”
Negative Synergy refers to “2+2=3” effect

This means that the combination of two efforts from two

individuals have a lesser output than they would have attained
if they worked separately.
NEGATIVE SYNERGY

The result of Negative Synergy is waste!

VALUING THE
DIFFERENCES

Valuing the differences is the essence of the

Synergy
• Mental, emotional and psychological differences between people.

• The key to valuing those differences is to realize that all people

see the world not as it is, but as they are.
WHAT DO YOU SEE IN THIS
PICTURE?

• We interpret differently because we’ve

been conditioned to interpret it
differently!
• Two people can disagree and both be
right.

“Unless we value the differences in our perceptions, unless we value each

other and give credence to the possibility that we’re both right, we will
never be able to transcend the limits of that conditioning”
FISHING FOR THIRD ALTERNATIVE –
A HIGHER WAY
“There is a way to solve the toughest problems we face, even those that look unsolvable. There is a path that cuts through nearly all
life’s dilemmas and deep divisions. There is a way forward. It’s not your way, and it’s not my way. It’s a higher way. It’s a better way
than any of us have thought of before. I call it the 3rd-Alternative” (Covey, 2011)

The problem is that most of us are unable to see through our differences to a new alternate due to our own internal inhibitions and
blockages!
CREATING THE THIRD ALTERNATIVE – A HIGHER WAY

REMEMBER!
 First Listen with Intent to Understand not to Reply
 Communicate till you reach a third acceptable solution for all parties
 Don’t try to make it “Your Way” or “My Way” but a “Better Way”
 Express How you feel and see the situation
 Humility takes us a Long Way in Life

FORCE FIELD ANALYSIS
A state of being at any level has a balance of both driving and restraining forces. It is these forces that really do
need to be taken into consideration, especially if people/organizations are serious about inspiring real change.
