DROP EVERYTHING AND READ (DEAR) REPORT

Jan 12, 2024

Grade and Section: Grade 8 Citrine

Total Number of enrolled Learners: 33
Number of students participated: 33
Male: 18 Female: 15

Observations / Impact of the Reading Activity:

Since this was the first Catch up Friday the students and I was still on the verge of exploring, I as their teacher at
this time was still uncertain from what would be the activities that I must employ to make this catch-up Friday a
successful one. What we did was, I have Called them one by one and we had a reading activity and the impact of
that was I was able to locate and distinguish the learners who have good skill in reading and bad skills in reading.
I have distinguished the class from 3 categories, Slow readers, Average readers and advanced readers. Based
from my observation, majority of my students was average readers and few of them was slow readers

Best Practices / Strategies:

Since this was our first catch-up Friday and we were still discovering and I am still thinking of interactive activities
that will be used in the future catch up Fridays. The strategy that I used was, reading comprehension strategy
where in my learners read individually and If they have a problem in reading, I was there to guide them and
correct them from their mistakes. In the later part of our session, I grouped them into different groups and they
were tasked to read a short story and they answered questions related on what they’ve read. Their scores were
an indication that they read the story and the have understood it.

Attitude / Behavior in Reading:

What I observed at first was some of the learners were shy or frightened to commit mistakes. They are afraid
because their classmates would laugh at them if they commit mistakes in reading. But what I did was I made
them realize that nobody is perfect so and they do not have the right to laugh or to degrade their classmate. I
also encourage my students to read words that they do not know and read a-loud so that I would correct them,
this was a great move because they gained their confidence in reading and not afraid to make mistakes and
when they commit mistakes I immediately correct it and taught them on how to read it.

Problems Encountered:

The only problem that I encountered is that some of my students are shy or doesn’t have the confidence to read,
it is somehow alarming because they are afraid to commit mistakes and they are very discouraged if they don’t
know the words that they are going to read as if they were in a trance and they would froze for a minute or two.

Recommendations:

My initial recommendation is that all teachers should encourage their students to read and if they commit
mistakes, we must not scold them, hence we must build their confidence because based from this Fist catch-up
Friday, some students are afraid of their teachers specially when then commit mistakes
