DROP EVERYTHING AND READ (DEAR) REPORT

Jan 19, 2024

Grade and Section: Grade 8 Citrine

Total Number of enrolled Learners: 33
Number of students participated: 30
Male: 15 Female: 15

Observations / Impact of the Reading Activity:

Today was our second Catch-up Friday and very excited because not only that we will be having reading
sessions but I will be looking in their progress as responsible readers. One thing that I have observed is the
attendance of my learners, the number of learners that participated during the First catch-up Friday was fine but
now they were more who participated. I also observed that some of my students was excited and keep on
asking, questions like “sir, are we going to read again?’’ and I simply answer, Yes. Based from the reading
activity that I employed is I could see their progress and will to learn new things and to become a better reader.
Although some of them not yet proficient in reading, I could see their effort and time just to improve on their
reading skills.

Best Practices / Strategies:

This was our second catch-up Friday and I could see some simple improvements from my grade 8 students and
this was good news for me as their adviser. The practice that I employed is a close up reading where in I invited
each of them to sit with me one on one and read beside me, this was very useful because I could immediately
address their mistakes if they have committed one. The beauty of this strategy is that they could read read on
their own without the pressure they could get from their classmate, and I will be their guide whenever they
commit errors.

Attitude / Behavior in Reading:

What I observed at first was some of the learners were shy or frightened to commit mistakes. They are afraid
because their classmates would laugh at them if they commit mistakes in reading. But what I did was I made
them realize that nobody is perfect so and they do not have the right to laugh or to degrade their classmate. I
also encourage my students to read words that they do not know and read a-loud so that I would correct them,
this was a great move because they gained their confidence in reading and not afraid to make mistakes and
when they commit mistakes I immediately correct it and taught them on how to read it.

Problems Encountered:

The only problem that I encountered is that some of my students are shy or doesn’t have the confidence to read,
it is somehow alarming because they are afraid to commit mistakes and they are very discouraged if they don’t
know the words that they are going to read as if they were in a trance and they would froze for a minute or two.

Recommendations:

My initial recommendation is that all teachers should encourage their students to read and if they commit
mistakes, we must not scold them, hence we must build their confidence because based from this Fist catch-up
Friday, some students are afraid of their teachers specially when then commit mistakes
