“COPING ACADEMIC CHALLENGES IN ADDRESSING LEARNING GAPS”

I. SITUATION

Basic days of the pupils are considered to be the most fundamental stage in their
academic endeavor. This is the stage where they are very receptive in every lessons and
ideas that the teacher or an adult might teach them. This is said to be the stage where they
absorb every details and information poured to them. Therefore, it is very ideal that the pupils
from kindergarten must be taught properly for them to be ready for their basic education
curriculum. Before, it has been a major role of the teachers to teach the children the
knowledge they need. But in this time of crisis, everybody is in charge of the learning of the
children. The parents play an essential role in the learning of the children.

II. FINDINGS AND INSIGHTS

The researcher believes that this thing must be taken consideration and needs to have
a good remediation to provide the quality education that every pupil deserves. So that the
teachers who might have the same experience would have an idea on how they could
address the situation to make things a lot easier and at the same time it could provide an
enjoyable learning experience to the learners. The teacher provides the learners with a
reading materials every day to be read at home and the parents must religiously follow-up
the pupil to further enhance the pupils learning ability. The pupils will be given modules
for them to tach their learners. It is now the major responsibility of the parents to teach
their learners. The parents have to fill in the checklist so that they will be guided in their
study sessions with the pupil. This will help the teacher and the parent identify the
strengths and weaknesses of the pupils in terms of reading readiness. It is good to have
this kind of study checklist with the parent so that they will have an idea on how to
address the learning needs of the learner.

III. SUMMARY
This study aims to highlight the influence of collaborative effort of teacher and
parent’s participation to the academic performance of the pupil. This research would be a
factual comparison of data gathered from the respondents. This research would help teachers
and parents become more equipped in rearing the children. This could also be a reference of
other related research. The researcher believes that it is best to tap the parents and encourage
them to get involved in the learning journey of their pupils and also encourages them to
constantly follow up the lessons so that it would instill to the minds of the pupils. Both the
parents/ guardians and the teacher have to share responsibility in molding young minds to
become competent in every aspect of learning domains

“PUPIL’S ATTITUDE IN THE LEARNING”

I. SITUATION
Teachers may have to face a lot of destructions in daily. They may have to deal with
an uninterested pupil or they may suffer from burden in absence of parents support.
Classroom behavior is one of the trickiest issues teachers face today because classrooms are
much more complicated than they were in the previous years, more learners to come to
school with behavioral problems than ever before and teachers face the challenge of
managing their behavior. The purpose of this action research is to demonstrate the types of
practices that teacher’s use when disturbing behavior occur in their classrooms. The present
study distinguishes the classroom management practices into two broad categories: positive
non-punitive practices and negative punitive practices.
II. INTERVENTION
The researcher would like to have a concrete study on the identified problem.
Intervention for struggling pupils behavior in the classroom. The problem is critical, therefore
it must be given with an immediate solution on this regard. So teachers must find ways and
means to cater the needs of the pupils which will result to high performance in every
assessment. This study distinguishes the classroom management practices into two broad
categories: positive non-punitive practices such as, establishing and re-establishing rules,
encouraging children to be responsible, promoting pupils to discuss a topic involving
behavior, emotions or situations of concern, etc. with punitive practices such as verbal
reprimand, intervention by yelling etc. research has yielded important information that has
practical implications of classroom behavior for improvement practices.
III. SUMMARY
Teachers employ and use strategies that have been proved to be effective and work in
their particular situation with their particular pupils. Research referring to teacher’s
management practices has shown that teachers tend to employ a variety of techniques. The
findings of the present study indicated the most common behavior management practices that
grade 2 teachers use in public school. These results extend the findings of previous studies
which reported that teachers tend to use positive ways of dealing with children’s behavior
problems, but they do deliver punishment as well.

MULTILINGUAL EDUCATION ON SCIENCE PERFORMANCE

Part I. SITUATION
The Department of Education Order No 16, s. February 17, 2012, states that starting
the school year 2012 – 2013, the mother tongue-based multilingual education will be
implemented in all public schools specifically in Grade I, as part of the K to 12 Curriculum.
This aims to develop appropriate cognitive and reasoning skills enabling children to operate
equality in different languages, starting in the mother tongue with transition to other subjects.
Learners begin their education in the language they understand best. The use of mother
tongue as the languages and instruction is an innovation approach by the Department of
Education. In a way the students will develop a strong foundation of leaning. Be it in oral or
written form. Based on observation nowadays, learners find it hard to express ideas directly
in English language. Most of them have prior knowledge but could hardly express
considering the grammatical aspects of it.
Part II. FINDINGS AND INSIGHTS

The effects of Mother tongue-based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) in Science

performance awakens the interest of many educators, including the researcher herself and
most especially the primary grade teachers who are using Mother tongue-based instruction as
a medium of instruction in the classroom.General information about the research, its
objectives and significance will be explained to the respondents. Only those who are willing
to participate will be included in the research, with no undue force and coercion. A written
informed consent will be given which will be read and explained to the respondents prior to
the conduct of the research.

“FACTORS AFFECTING POOR PERFORMANCE OF THE LEARNERS ”

I. Introduction/Situation
Learners are the most important assets in every educational institution. The learners’
performance plays an important role in producing quality graduates who will become a great
leader and a better Filipino citizen in the near future. Thus, learners have to put the greatest
effort in their study to obtain good grades and to have a better future. Nowadays, there are
learners have a poor academic performance because of many factors affecting on it.
The factors affecting a student’s academic performance arise from several reasons.
This research is conducted to determine the factors that affect the academic performance of
the selected learners in Cabacungan Elementary School.

II. Findings and Insights

The researcher would like to have a concrete study on the identified problem. The
result of this study may benefit the learners, parents , as well as the teachers in order for them
to understand and help their childrens/students to improve their academic performance with
the findings that are established by this study.
Below are the recommended intervention strategies that would help the learners to
improve their academic performance
1.) Parents, teachers and other stakeholders must have a collaborative effort to support the
learners need to have a better learning amidst with this pandemic.
2.) Parent’s must encourage their children to answer and actively participate the learning
modalities given and follow up their performance.
3.) Teacher must find ways to follow-up the performance of the learners via text, call, chat
and I-visit specially to those learners who don’t have gadgets and no signals.
4.) Teachers must motivate learners by giving some rewards that would encourage them to
do their best.
5.) Teachers’ must use different methods or strategies because of the diversity of the learners.

III. Summary
This study will help the learners by allowing them to understand better the factors that
can affect their academic performance. They may be able to improve their academic
performance with the findings that are established by this study. The parents also may be able
to understand and help their children regarding their school matters and give them support.
For the teachers, this study may help them to recognize problems encountered by the learners.
Teaching is the most dynamic process in the life of a teacher, and learning is the most
dynamic process in the life of the learners. With these, teachers and the parents of the learners
must have a communication to discuss about the performace of their child.
Therefore the researcher suggests a research specifying a subject in determining the
factors affecting the academic performance of the learners and adding respondents.

HOME LEARNING IN TIMES OF COVID-19 PANDEMIC

I.SITUATION
The widespread prevalence of COVID-19 pandemic has affected academic and
parents alike. Since there is no face-to-face classes’ students are missing social interaction
which is vital for better learning and grooming while most schools have started online
classes. This has become a tough routine for the parents working since they have to ensure
their children’s education. The study presented was designed to explore the experiences of
home learning in times of COVID-19. A descriptive qualitative study was planned to explore
the experiences of parents about home learning and management during COVID-19. Three
major themes emerged after the data analysis: impact of COVID on children learning;
support given by schools; and strategies used by caregivers at home to support learning. It
was analyzed that the entire nation and academicians around the world have come forward to
support learning at home offering a wide range of free online avenues to support parents to
facilitate home-learning.
II. INTERVENTION
It is understandable that this wave of innovations in learning is not always convenient,
especially given the fact that the transition has been abrupt rather than gradual. Hence,
parents are concerned about the challenges that remote learning has brought for them and
their children. Nothing is impossible for a person that is much willing to bend for the sake of
their children’s learning.Parents around the world are rightfully concerned about how their
children’s routines are disrupted extensively. To combat this issue, they have designed
homemade time-tables according to which children should have something to do at most
times and should have a normal sleep-wake cycle. Implementing a schedule helps children
feel less restless and more productive. Home learning has emerged as a substitute to the
conventional schooling methods, which should be made effective to provide essential
learning skills to children at home using the limited available resources. Online resources
which are adapted to our curriculum’s expectations can be implemented at home.
III. SUMMARY
These are uncertain times for humanity in general and for the young developing
minds in particular. To mitigate the physical and mental health consequences, the
government, Non- Government Organizations (NGOs), and parents must provide a structure
by utilizing regular routines, communication and developing new partnerships. The new
normal education in the Philippines is at stake without the equal cooperation of the teacher,
parents, and the learners. Full-cooperation of the teachers and learners without the parents
may not guarantee quality education. Everyone must have the role to play and must take it

the English and to preserve the Philippine cultural treasure as well.

Part II. Findings and Insights

Language is one of the most important characteristics forms of human behavior. It has
accordingly always had a place in the academic world. The language used in the classroom
dramatically affects children’s opportunity and ability to learn, yet the decision is often made
without a careful consideration of implication for learning outcomes. Language plays a vital
role in facilitating the learning of pupils and academic achievement.
On the contrary, mother tongue as a medium of instruction and as a subject has caused
some problem to the teachers which affects the English language proficiency and
comprehension of the learners. Upon reaching higher grades, no more mother tongue
instruction to be use in all subjects. The effects of mother tongue instruction are manifested
when the learner steps in Grade four (Grade IV). Some of these are; mother tongue language
used in their formation years (Kindergarten to Grade 3) disrupts the smoothness of the
communication, students with lack of confidence tends to use mother tongue language
instead of proper English language. It affects student’s performance in terms of
communication.

Part III. Summary

The effects of Mother tongue-based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) in learners
performance awaken the interest of many educators, including the researcher herself and
most especially the primary grade teachers who are using Mother tongue-based instruction as

FACTORS AFFECTING THE READING COMPREHENSION OF GRADE THREE-

POLITE PUPILS OF CABACUNGAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Part I. Situation/Scenario/setting

There are a lot of contributing factors on how reading skill affects the behavior and
learning of the pupils in a class. In fact, one can already foretell if a pupil will be promoted
in the next level or not through finding out if a child can read well or not. It is already crystal
clear that when a child can’t read, he has shown poor academic standing. Obviously the lack
of reading skill will eventually lead to failing grades. It is indeed a big problem especially
when the pupil is already in the third grade. This is why the researcher would like to focus on
how to reinforce reading to the non-readers and improve the reading skill of the frustrated
reader of the researcher’s class.

Part II. Findings and Insights

In this research, the researcher will know the factors affecting the reading
performance of the grade III-Polite pupils of Cabacungan Elementary School and that she can
then make plans, programs, and interventions to improve the reading performance of the
frustrated and slow learners so that they will not be left behind for they will be remediated
and catered with the exact instruction they needed.

Part III. Summary

This research aimed to study the factors affecting the reading performance of grade
III-Polite pupils of Cabacungan Elementary School, to reinforce and improve the reading
skill of the frustrated readers of the researcher’s class. By doing this study, the researcher will
discover the factors affecting the reading performance of the grade III-Polite pupils of
Cabacungan Elementary School and that she can make a plan, program and intervention for
the frustrated learners to improve. The slow learners will be remediated or catered with the
exact instruction they need.

IMPROVING WORD PROBLEM SOLVING BY IMPROVING READING SKILLS

AMONG GRADE SIX PUPILS OF CABACUNGAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
PART I
SITUATION, SCENARIO, SETTING
During Math classes, the researcher observed the difficulty of the pupils to fully grasp
the lesson in Word Problem Solving. In order to solve this, aside from providing drill-and-
practice activities, she also translated the questions in vernacular. Later on, when the pupils
were tasked to independent learning, most of them keep on asking what the question means
though they know how to read it properly in English.
PART II
FINDINGS AND INSIGHTS
The pupils already know the concept of the different operations of Mathematics
subject; however, when it was presented in word problem solving to them, they experienced
difficulty in doing so. In a certain way, when the researcher check as to how their reading
comprehension skill in English subject, most of the pupils has difficulty in answering the
sample questions provided.
Since Mathematics was written in English language, the researcher comes up with an
idea to provide refreshments activities written in English not just during Math classes but also
with other subjects.
PART III
SUMMARY
The purpose of the researcher was to ensure greater understanding and retention of the
lesson in Word Problem Solving among the Grade 6 pupils. The intention was not only
academically but also emotionally as to how they would make wise decisions in life.
