I. Context and Rationale

Reading is one important element in achieving language proficiency. In being

competent in a language, such as English, reading is second to oral communication in the

process of language development. However, it is the more complicated process for in

reading, ther are more skills to be mastered, such as word recognition, sound production,

and reading comprehension.

Reading competency is vital in the educational process, particularly in the primary

grades. Pupils do lots of reading activities inside the classroom. With activity-enhanced

lessons, pupils must be able to read and to understand instructions. Once pupils understand

what they read, scholastic performance in all subjects would greatly improved.
In VES the Grade III-4 teacher observed that
50% of the class were non-readers. Thus the
researchers come up an intervention to address
this problem.
I. Action Research Questions

This action research will aim to increase the reading proficiency of Grade III-4

pupils for S.Y. 2017-2018. It answers the following questions:

1. What is the frequency and percentage of reading proficiency before the

intervention?

2. What is the frequency and percentage of reading proficiency after the

intervention?

3. Is there a significant difference on the frequency and percentage of reading

proficiency before and after the intervention?

I. Proposed Innovation, Intervention, and Strategy

The researchers will be using the peer teaching strategy in developing the reading

proficiency of the pupils. The teacher will be choosing 17 independents readers to

assist the researchers in conducting remedial class to the 17 non readers. The session

will start at 12:30 to 1:00 in the afternoon. The researchers will orient first the

independent readers before conducting the interventions.

I. Action Research Methods

a. Participants

The participants of the action research will be the 17 non readers to be assisted by

17 independent readers.

b. Data Gathering Methods

On pre- implementation, the researcher will conduct the Phil IRI pre-test and

identify the non-readers and interpret the reading proficiency of the pupils.

On post-implementation the researcher will conduct the Phil-IRI post-test and

determine the reading proficiency level and disseminate the result.

c. Data Analysis Plan

The following will show the data analysis plan of the study:

1. To determine the reading proficiency before the intervention, frequency

count and percentage distribution will be used.

2. To determine the reading proficiency after the intervention, frequency count

and percentage distribution will be used.

3. To ascertain the significant difference on the reading proficiency before and after the

intervention, t-test will be used.

3. Action Research Work Plan and Timeliness
3. Cost Estimates
3. Plans for Dissemination and Utilization

The results of the study will be disseminated and utilized by the following

persons. The principal will be given the results of the reading proficiency of the

pupils and may suggests the method in improving the reading skills of the pupils.

Also, the results of the study may be the baseline of the teachers in using peer

teaching in developing learning to the pupils.

Furthermore, the parents will be informed on the progress of the pupils.
