This document discusses requirements for a Class I type vessel intended to contain lethal or toxic substances. Key points include:
- The vessel must be designed to operate down to -200C and welding should use double or single welded butt joints with backing strips.
- The vessel will undergo a full radiographic inspection and hydraulic pressure test is mandatory.
- There are no limitations on vessel thickness and four welding categories are defined depending on joint locations. Inspection is required during material selection and fabrication.

• To contain lethal (poisonous gases) or toxic substances
• Vessel Designed for operation upto -200C • Vessels intended for any other operation not mentioned in Code but agreed upon between purchaser and manufacturer. • Welding should be double welded or some times single welded butt joints with backing strips. • Vessel should be fully radiographed and so J = 1.0 for DWBJ and J = 0.9 for SWBJ. • No limitation on thickness. • Hydraulic pressure test is mandatory. Class I type Vessel • This type of vessels are designed in any thickness requirements. • Four welding categories depending upon the location of joints: – Category A : (Longitudinal) main shell, formed flat head – Category B : (Circumferential) main shell, nozzles, joints between transition and cylinder – Category C : flanges, stone laps, tube sheets and flat ends – Category D: nozzles to shell, transitions in diameter, heads to vessel Class I type Vessel • Inspection during selection of MoC and Fabrication is very much required. • Prepared specimen should undergo mechanical test, weld test and pressure hydraulic test before kept in operation.
