Generator engine - Warsila W8L20 – Black out
2
1. First fault indication
19.06.2020
FSO has plan annual calibration LACT Metering, needs to run three
generators to start up COP.
15.56.22 G/E2 online in MGO Mode, Power 491kw (Load 30%).
15.58.02 G/E3 started and run in MGO Mode – All normal.
16.01.34 G/E3 Synchronized to G/E2 in auto mode successful and load
balancing shared. (G/E2 217 kw, G/E3 260 kw).
16.09.04 check G/E2 before put three generators on line to run COP
for annual calibration LACT metering. Thus, all load was changed to
G/E3 (419 kw) and then stop G/E2. (G/E3 is independent on line – in
MGO Mode).

1. Effect & Possible Cause Table
The G/E3 black out when take independent working in MGO with
First alarm “ALM Low FO Press, engine inlet”.
• Transmitter (PT 101) of FO press, engine inlet failure
• Fuel oil system failure
• Program failure

Quick closing valve was opened up for inspection and found the valve
disc (item 04 in draw.) was dropped out of the disc gland (item 06 in
draw.)

2. Defective/Event description
19.06.2020
• Check MGO fuel line system of GE3:
• - Inspect Transmitter (PT 101) of FO press, found normal.
• - Check out side of quick closing valve found valve, not found any
abnormal.
• - Check MGO manual valves, not found any abnormal.

• Install pressure gauge to the engine fuel piping inlet to cross check to
PT101, found same pressure reading.
• Quick closing valve opened up for inspection, found the disc was
dropped out of valve stem/disc gland.

• The valve disc of quick closing valve was fitted back with proper
locking.
• Valve was carried out function test and found OK. Valve was fitted back
into system.
• Line up valve and check MGO engine inlet, found MGO pressure
reading is normal (7.1 bars) same as GE1 and GE2.
• Test run G/E3 unload, parallel to GE1, GE2 on normal load, found all
normal.
• Parallel GE1, GE2 and GE3 to startup COP/ IG system/ Run LACT
system and other loads for checking (the load used same as offtake
operation condition). Found GE1, 2, 3 are in normal operation in fuel
oil and Gas.
