 Sojourner Truth was
born in New York and
lived from approximately
1797 to November 26-
1883.

 She was sold at eleven


years old for $100 with a
flock of sheep.
RELIGION
 She was an African-American
abolitionist and women’s rights
activist. She believed the Holy
Spirit wanted her to have this
name.

 Inspired by her conversations


with God, she walked to
freedom. She escaped with
her infant daughter in 1826.

 She became a traveling


preacher
ACCOMPLISHMENTS

 She was the first black


woman to successfully
challenge a white man
in court and to get her
son back from a slave
owner.

 Recruited black troops


for the Union Army
during the Civil War.
