- Organized by the Local Education
Authorities (LEAs)
- An LEA is the local government body.
- An LEA is responsible for state schools &
further education in a district.
- LEAs are funded by the central
government & by local property taxes
Educational System

- 2 sectors: state schools & independent

STATE SCHOOL
Compulsory education
- From the age of 5 – 16.
- Be free for every child.
- Coeducational schools.
- 3 basic levels:
 Nursery schools : 2 – 4 (voluntary)
+ educational games
+ supported by the LEAs
 There's no law which provides for
education on the underfives.
 For children from
2 to 4 years old.

Compulsory education
 Primary school: 5 – 11
+ infant school: 5 -7
+ junior school: 7 -11
+ Eleven- Plus Examination

- Single – sex &boarding schools
- 3 basic levels:
 Pre-preparatory schools : 5-7
 Preparatory schools (Prep schools): 7 -13
+ Common Entrance examination
 Public schools: 13 -18
+ provide an academic & prepare for higher
education
+ do a lot of sports
FURTHER EDUCATION
- The standard school-leaving examination:
General Certificate of Secondary Education
(GCSE).
- Provided by the sixth forms in secondary
schools, sixth form colleges, & further education
colleges.
- Prepare for A-level & AS level.
- Offer many courses for both young people &
adults.
- Attended full-time, part-time or distance
learning.
HIGHER EDUCATION
- Provided by Universities & Polytechnics.
 Universities: independent institutes
+ Vice-Chancellor. Chancellor
+ Oxford Uni (12th cent), Cambridge Uni (13)
+ Degrees: BA, BSc, MA, MSc, Ph.D
 Polytechnics:
+ closer link with commerce & industry.
+ provide more technical & vocational bias.
 Open University (1969) : distance learning
