CONFIDENCE INTERVAL

 A CONFIDENCE INTERVAL (CI) IS A TYPE OF

ESTIMATE COMPUTED FROM THE STATISTICS OF
THE OBSERVED DATA.

 GIVE A LOWER AND UPPER CONFIDENCE BOUND

FOR A PARAMETER BEING ESTIMATED.

 THE TRUE VALUE OF THE POPULATION MEAN IS

NEVER KNOWN. IT CAN ONLY BE APPROXIMATED
OR ESTIMATED.
NORMAL DISTRIBUTION
CONFIDENCE INTERVAL
 When making a confidence interval, you can choose exactly
how confident you want to be that the range contains the
population mean.
 For example, if you choose to construct a 95% confidence
interval, this means that if you chose data randomly 100 times
and constructed confidence intervals for each, 95 times out of
100 the population mean would fall somewhere within the
confidence interval.
UNDERSTANDING CONFIDENCE INTERVAL

With repeated sample of 50 rabbits from the population, we are 95%

confidence that the true mean will be contained between 3.5 lbs and 5.5
lbs.
Confidence Intervals for μ

√𝑛
Use the t table with df=n-1

 For n > 30

Use the Z table for the standard normal

distribution.

PROBLEM SAMPLE

 Descriptive statistics on variables measured in a sample of a

n=3,539 participants attending the Systolic Blood Pressure
examination of the offspring in the Framingham Heart Study
which has a Sample Mean of 127.3 and Standard Deviation of
19.0. What is the confidence interval?
  s
X́ ± z ( )
√n
  95% Confidence Interval =

  = 127.3

So the confidence interval is (126.7,127.9).

Interpretation:
A point estimate for the true mean systolic blood
pressure in the population is 127.3, and we are 95%
confident that the true mean is between 126.7 and
127.9. The margin of error is very small here because
of the large sample size .
PROBLEM SAMPLE
Sample Size 10
Sample Mean 121.2
Standard Deviation 11.1
Confidence Interval ?

Solution
Degree of Freedom (df) = n-1
10-1
df = 9
t value (95% confidence level) = 2.262
