The Leaf
A leaf is the principal lateral appendage of the vascular plant stem,
usually borne above ground and specialized for photosynthesis. The
leaves, stem, flower and fruit together form the shoot system. Leaves are
the main organs of photosynthesis and transpiration.
Parts Of A Leaf
•Leaf base is the lowermost part of the leaf by which the leaf is joined to the node of the stem. It protects the young axillary
bud.
•Leafstalk is the slender, elongated structure by which the leaves of most plants are attached to the stem. Also called petiole.
Leaves lacking a petiole are called sessile or apetiolate.
•Plant leaf lamina is the flat region of the leaf containing the chloroplasts, veins and the stomata.
•The shape of the tip (apex) of the leaf.
•The margin is the perimeter of the leaf between the apex and base. It is an important base of plant identification.
•Midrib The central, thick, linear structure that runs along the length of a plant lamina. Veins that branch out from the
midrib transport water and glucose around the plant. The midrib provides strength throughout the leaf, keeping it upright

and sturdy in the wind.

• A pair of small, usually leaf-like appendages borne at the base of the petiole in many plants. Stipules protect the next leaf or
bud.

Rose Plant
The rose is a type of flowering shrub. Its name comes from the
Latin word Rosa. The flowers of the rose grow in many
different colors, from the well-known red rose or yellow rose
and sometimes white or purple rose. Roses belong to the
family of plants called Rosaceae.
Most rose species are native to Asia, with smaller numbers
being native to North America and a few to Europe and
northwest Africa. Roses from different regions of the world
hybridize readily, giving rise to types that overlap the parental
forms, and making it difficult to determine basic species.
Leaf Of A Rose Plant

• Type Of Leaf
Rose leaves are compound.In rose
plant, the leaf is divided completely
along the mid vein, to form leaflets.
Each of these leaflets may appear like
a simple leaf.
Leaf Of A Rose Plant

• Arrangement of leaves
Roses have alternate leaves. In this
kind of arrangement , a single leaf
arises at each node alternatively.

• Leaf Venation
Rose leaves have reticulate venation. In
this kind of venation , the veins and
veinlets are interconnected and form a
network on the leaf blade.
Functions Of A Leaf
. A leaf is to produce food for the plant by photosynthesis. Chlorophyll, the
substance that gives plants their characteristic green colour, absorbs light
energy. Oxygen is passed into the atmosphere through stomata (pores in
the leaf surface).

. Stomata (pores in the leaf surface)regulates gas exchange between the

plant and environment and controls water loss.

. The water, warmed by the sun, turns into vapour and passes out through
thousands of tiny pores (stomata) mostly on the underside of the leaf
surface. This is transpiration.
Interesting Facts
• Rose leafs are edible and they prevent various
diseases.
• Used as natural pesticide due to it's special odour.
• Some are used as landscape plants, for hedging
and for other utilitarian purposes such as game
cover and slope stabilization.
• Also used as natural fragrant substance.
