NAS Protocols

• NAS protocols are needed to talk to NAS

components
• Knowledge of the protocol is needed
• Common Internet file System : was the
outcome of Server Messaging Block Protocol
and was later renamed as Common Internet
File System
• Network File System : Protocol
The combined power of virtualization and
performance was supported by this.
It helps in storing the data at file level than in
block level.
iSCSI is another protocol stack for NAS
It gives options to access data at block level
This is an inexpensive protocol. It doesn't needs
sophisticated adapters and softwares
• Fiber Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) is another
NAS protocol.

 It is a combination of Fiber channel over

Ethernet.

 Less in use
NAS Interconnects
• To interconnect NAS devices , we need NAS
interconnects.
• Understanding this will enable better storage
decisions about NAS systems
• Fast Ethernet is one of the best among all the
interconnect architecture.
• Easy to understand and not expensive
• It is good to transfer of up to 10MB of data with a
group of fewer group of people.
• Gigabit Ethernet servers to large group of
people with the file transfer of more than
10MB
• This can accommodate 100 people accessing
the server at very good speed and relatively
very good performance
• But when the group size is increased then
there would be some performance issues.
• To overcome this, the new interconnect
protocol is 10GE
• 10GE :
• This is the fastest interconnect protocol,
currently and provides very good performance
when there is demand of huge size file
transfers with more speed.
• Enterprises use hybrid interconnect protocols
as per requirements.
• Pricing plays an important role while choosing
the protocol
NAS Requirements
• The vendors have different devices over
different deployment, having an idea will help
in identifying a suitable NAS system
• The primary requirement is connecting multiple
servers without any performance loss, the
amount of storage needed for the file use.
• The requirements that are technical necessity
for the NAS systems has to be explored to
match the real-world deployment and budget
management
