GREAT IRONIES
But you say, “The surrender of all my
idols will break my heart.” This is what
is needed. In giving up all for God, you
fall upon the rock and are broken. Give
up all for him without delay, for unless
you are broken, you are worthless.

ST August 8, 1892, par. 2

They never know what it is to have peace and
harmony in the soul; for without entire
surrender there is no rest, no joy. Almost
Christians, yet not fully Christians, they seem
near the kingdom of heaven, but they do not
enter therein. Almost but not wholly saved
means to be not almost but wholly lost.
1SM 399.2
When the mind dwells upon self, it is
turned away from Christ, the source of
strength and life. Hence it is Satan's
constant effort to keep the attention
diverted from the Saviour and thus
prevent the union and communion of
the soul with Christ.
SC 72
The pleasures of the world, life's cares
and perplexities and sorrows, the
faults of others, or your own faults and
imperfections--to any or all of these he
will seek to divert the mind. Do not be
misled by his devices.
SC 72
Many who are really conscientious, and
who desire to live for God, he too often
leads to dwell upon their own faults
and weaknesses, and thus by
separating them from Christ he hopes
to gain the victory.
SC 72
We should not make self the center and
indulge anxiety and fear as to whether
we shall be saved. All this turns the
soul away from the Source of our
strength. Commit the keeping of your
soul to God, and trust in Him.
SC 72
Talk and think of Jesus. Let self be lost
in Him. Put away all doubt; dismiss your
fears.
SC 72
We may deny Him in our words, by speaking
evil of others, by foolish talking, jesting and
joking, by idle or unkind words, or by
prevaricating (defensive), speaking contrary
to truth. In our words we may confess that
Christ is not in us. In our character we may
deny Him by loving our ease, by shunning the
duties and burdens of life which { 3T 331.3}
someone must bear if we do not, and by loving
sinful pleasure. We may also deny Christ by pride of
dress and conformity to the world, or by
uncourteous behavior. We may deny Him by loving
our own opinions and by seeking to maintain and
justify self. We may also deny Him in allowing the
mind to run in the channel of lovesick
sentimentalism and to brood (worry) over our
supposed hard lot and trials. {3T 331.3}
Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me;
for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye
shall find rest unto your souls.
For my yoke [is] easy, and my burden is
light.

Matthew 11:29-30
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide
[is] the gate, and broad [is] the way,
that leadeth to destruction, and many
there be which go in thereat:
Matthew 7:13
This know also, that in the last days perilous
times shall come For men shall be lovers of
their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud,
blasphemers, disobedient to parents,
unthankful, unholy…Ever learning, and never
able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

Three Kinds of Man

Carnal

And I, brethren, could not speak unto you

as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, [even]
as unto babes in Christ. I have fed you
with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto
ye were not able [to bear it], neither yet
now are ye able.
Carnal

For ye are yet carnal: for whereas [there is]

among you envying, and strife, and
divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as
men? For while one saith, I am of Paul;
and another, I [am] of Apollos; are ye not
carnal?
So then because thou art lukewarm, and
neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of
my mouth… Behold, I stand at the door,
and knock: if any man hear my voice, and
open the door, I will come in to him. To
him that overcometh will I grant to sit with
me in my throne, even as I also overcame.
Revelation 3:16. 20, 21
Carnal Christians hard to identify

Carnal Separates

These be they who separate themselves,

sensual, having not the Spirit. But ye,
beloved, building up yourselves on your
most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost.

Jude 19
Not liberal vs. conservative

Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for

whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he
also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh
shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he
that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit
reap life everlasting.

Gal 6:7-8
Spirit and Flesh

Are ye so foolish? having begun in the

Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the
flesh? Have ye suffered so many things in
vain?
Galatians 3:3
Nevertheless I have [somewhat] against
thee, because thou hast left thy first love.
Remember therefore from whence thou
art fallen, and repent, and do the first
works;.

Revelation 2:4-5
Asking the spirit with carnal attitude

Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask

amiss, that ye may consume [it] upon your
lusts.

James 4:3
Lukewarmness: active but left Christ
outside longing for your love.

Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if

any man hear my voice, and open the door,
I will come in to him, and will sup with him,
and he with me.
James 4:3
A spirit contrary to the spirit of Christ
would deny Him, whatever the profession.
Men may deny Christ by evilspeaking, by
foolish talking, by words that are
untruthful or unkind. They may deny Him
by shunning life’s burdens, by the pursuit
of sinful pleasure.
DA 357
They may deny Him by conforming to the
world, by uncourteous behavior, by the
love of their own opinions, by justifying
self, by cherishing doubt, borrowing
trouble, and dwelling in darkness. In all
these ways they declare that Christ is not in
them.

5 Knocking Virgins

Afterward came also the other virgins,

saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. But he
answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I
know you not.
Matthew 25:11-12
Knowing Him

[Even] the Spirit of truth; whom the world

cannot receive, because it seeth him not,
neither knoweth him: but ye know him;
for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in
you.
John 14:16
Know means abiding relationship

And he that keepeth his commandments

dwelleth in him, and he in him. And
hereby we know that he abideth in us, by
the Spirit which he hath given us.
1 John 3:24
Without the spirit you are lost.

So then they that are in the flesh cannot

please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but
in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God
dwell in you. Now if any man have not the
Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.

1 John 3:24
The greatest dereference between the
carnal and the spiritual is the abiding
presence of the Holy Spirit inside.
If the Holy Spirit is taken away from our
church today 95% percent of what we do
would continue and no one would notice
the difference.

A. W. Tozer
The reason why there is so little of the
Spirit of God manifested is that ministers
learn to do without it.

Gospel Worker p. 674o247

Learning, talents, eloquence, every natural
or acquired endowment, may be
possessed; but without the presence of the
Spirit of God, no heart will be touched, no
sinner be won to Christ.

in the universe.
