Identifying maternal needs following
childbirth: comparison between
pregnant woman  and recent mothers
Justine Slomian, Jean-Yves Reginster, Patrick Emonts & Olivier
Bruyère
summary
The article is all about identifying maternal needs following childbirth with a
comparison  between pregnant women in their last trimester and recent mothers with
0-6  months age of the child. Four categories of needs were highlighted in the study:
for information, for  psychological support, for the sharing of experiences and for
practical and material support. They used questionnaires online. As for the results all
four categories were present during the  postpartum period. The need for information
is more present during pregnancy than during the  postpartum period, The needs for
psychological support and to share experiences seemed to be  closely linked. And
lastly, the need for practical support was also more present during the  postpartum
period than during pregnancy. All mothers met the four identified needs during the
postpartum period but at different levels of intensity.
Nursing Implications
For the nursing implications, Nurses should also give a health teaching to
the mother after  childbirth because as it was stated in the article that health
care providers are more focused on  the health teaching in the pregnancy
stage or before child birth which is also very important.  Thus, some new
mothers rely on the internet to find answers to their questions after
childbirth. Nurses can also give credible sources on the internet where the
mother can read about  pregnancy. Also, the nurse could also tell the
mother to not hesitate to ask any questions  about her pregnancy and
postnatal care for the mother to have more knowledge in her  pregnancy
and after childbirth.
insights
Health care providers should also give health teaching about the
postnatal period as much as they  give health teaching in the
pregnancy period. Because the mothers, especially the new mothers,
rely on the internet more if they have questions in mind, not knowing
some information on the internet is not true because they are not
aware that much of the information in some particular sites are not
credible. Knowing that these information are what they are going to
use  as a basis of the mother and the baby’s well being.
