As our title A Struggle of Women in the Disney's Movie “MULAN 2020”,
it can be seen that the approach we are using is feminism.

What is Feminism?
In general, feminism is an understanding of the existence of gender equality for
women and men in society.
This understanding often focuses on how women should be valued and given
equal opportunities in social, cultural and other social matters.

Feminism is present in society as a form of social inequality that denigrates and

labels the status of women as weak creatures.
Disney’s Movie “MULAN 2020”
The work that we chose to criticize was the movie "MULAN"
which was released at the end of 2020.

This movie itself is adapted from the animation of a Chinese legend

behind Disney’s “MULAN 1998”. The original story of the film
MULAN was written by Robert D. San Souci

The movie MULAN (2020) tells the story of a young Chinese woman
named Hua Mulan who disguises herself as a man to replace her father as
the representative of the Hua family as a soldier of the Chinese emperor. As
a first daughter, Mulan was burdened with the task of protecting her
family’s good name and bringing honor to her family.
FEMINISM & MULAN 2020
The reason the author uses the theory of feminism in this discussion is because the
content contained in the movie “MULAN”, which was released in 2020, is closely
related to feminist values that discuss the struggle of women.

Based on the previous synopsis, this movie really highlights the differences
between men and women in a strong social and cultural strata. Where men are
entrusted with big responsibilities as superior beings in society, while for
women with all the limitations that are naturally formed in society, they make
them weak creatures in a certain scope.

If men have the authority to become the rules in society,

women are instead used as the object of the purpose of
making a rule.
Another thing is reflected in several scenes and dialogues in
the movie "MULAN 2020"

In this dialogue, Mulan's mother said, "Mulan is a daughter, not a son. And women give honor
to the family only by getting married.”
Another thing is reflected in several scenes and dialogues in
the movie "MULAN 2020"

This scene shows how a woman should behave and how to be a good wife.
Because Mulan cannot behave gracefully as previously taught, the people
around her often thinks she is a disgrace to the Hua family.
HUA MULAN’S STRUGGLE
Mulan's struggles continued when she fled in place of her father from
Hua’s family and disguised herself as a man.

Mulan hid her identity as much as

possible so as not to be caught.
Scene that women are very belittled by men.

Women who are brave, funny and smart are not considered
to exist.
Long story short, when the war will take place. Mulan shows her true
identity that she is a woman.

Many people who blaspheme and banish her. But there are also those who defend her
because of her courage.
THE END OF HUA MULAN’S STRUGGLE

She proved that

Hua Mulan, a woman,
could become a true warrior.

Short story after revealing his identity, Mulan bravely continues to help the war without the
knowledge of other soldiers. Mulan managed to save the dynasty and returned home.
Then she proved to everyone that women can also be successful, brave,
smart and can do anything that men do, and can also maintain family honor
not only by getting married.
Conclusion
From the previous discussion, it can be concluded that this film contains
the values of feminism as well as patriarchy at the same time. This is
reflected in the figure of Hua Mulan who fights for her rights and beliefs
and is not entangled with society's perceptions that women must always
be regulated and live within the scope of cultural limitations and societal
perspectives.

There are several lessons learned apart from the values of feminism and
patriarchy; namely the existence of moral values that can be a lesson for society
especially for women if they can become children who are devoted to the family,
regardless of all the desires to be achieved.
