Types of Vaccines
There are three types of vaccine:
Bacteria:
BCG
Oral typhoid (Salmonella typhi)
Oral cholera
Inactivated vaccines
Hepatitis A
Influenza
Rabies

Hepatitis B, HPV

Icepacks are flat rectangular plastic
containers filled with water or gel.

Shake test
A vaccine vial monitor (VVM) is a label with a
heat-sensitive material, which is placed on a
vaccine vial to register cumulative heat
exposure over time.

These vaccines contain special preservatives

The vaccine vial septum has not been
submerged in water.
The Vaccine Vial Monitor (VVM) has not reached the discard
point.
For all freezedried or lyophilized vaccines.
once reconstituted, the vials must be
discarded at the end of each immunization
session or at the end of 6 hours, whichever
comes first.
BASIC PRINCIPLES OF REFRIGERATION
Absorption system
Absorption refrigerator is quiet when in
operation since there is no moving part.
The main parts consist of boiler, absorber
vessel, condensor and evaporator.
The system has ammonia, water and
hydrogen.
Water absorb ammonia in absorber vessel to
to the boiler:
The aqua solution is heated upto 180C
Ths leads to the formation of ammonia
At the condenser
evaporator cabinet.
The gas the mves back to the absorber vessel and the
process repeats itself.

Target population
Immunisation schedule
BCG 1 1
PCV 3 3
Pentavalent 3 3
Measles 1 1
Yellow fever 1 1
Tetanus Toxoid 5
Immunization coverage target
The national policy is to reach every child.
During immunization, the number of vaccine doses used is generally higher than the
number of individuals immunized.
The number of doses in excess represents “lost doses “or vaccine wastage.
Doses spoilt for one reason or the other e.g. VVM reached discard point, breakdown in
the cold chain, frozen DTP+ HepB and TT or removed labels.
(100)/(100-25) = 1.33
