Human Metabolic Requirements

Desirable Body Weight (DBW)

Ideal Body Weight (IBW)
• Modified Tanhouser’s Method
– DBW (kg) = (Ht in cm – 100) – 10%(Ht in cm – 100)
• Body Mass Index (NV 19-24.9)
– Desirable for males = 22
– Desirable for females = 20.8 or 21
• Adopted method
– Males = Ht of 5ft = 112lbs
– Females = Ht of 5ft = 106lbs
– Add 4lbs (1.8kg) for every inch above 5ft or subtract 4lbs
for every inch below 5ft
Total Caloric Requirement (TCR) or Total
Energy Requirement (TER)
• Krause Method (based on physical activity)
• Cal/kg DBW/day
Activity Cal/kg DBW/day
Bed rest (confined in hospital) 27.5
Sedentary (bank teller) 30
Light (teacher) 35
Moderate (housewife w/o maid) 40
Heavy (construction worker) 45
Weight loss/gain
• Add/subtract 500Cal to/from TER to gain/lose
1lb/week
• 1000Cal to/from TER to gain/lose 2lbs/week
• Use activity above or below the actual activity
of individual in computing for TER to gain or
lose 1-2lbs/week
Distribution of TER to CHO, CHON, fats
Nutrient Percentage of TER Calories/gram
Carbohydrates 50-70% (60%) 4
Proteins 10-15% (15%) 4
Fat 20-25% (25%) 9

Normal Protein requirement: 1.14g/kg DBW/day

For protein build-up = 1.5g/kg DBW/day (ex malnourished patients)
