• Gerunds & Infinitives are enemies

GERUNDS VS. INFINITIVES

• Gerunds:
The form of gerunds (adding –ing to the verb)
E.g. walking, swimming, reading…etc.
I am sleeping (present continuous)
I do not like sleeping (gerunds)
GERUNDS VS. INFINITIVES

• Infinitives
The form of infinitives (to + verb)
E.g. to do, to sleep, to eat, to walk… etc.
GERUNDS
RULE 1
• Gerunds can be used as a subject of a sentence
For example:
1. Walking is good for your health.
2. Playing tennis is fun.
• Gerunds is used in the same ways as a noun (as a subject or as an object)
For example:
1. We enjoy playing tennis.
GERUNDS RULE 2

• Gerunds can be used as an object of prepositions

For example:
1. We talked about going to Canada for our vacation.
2. I am interested in learning more about your work.
• (to) is a preposition, not part of an infinitive form (p.302)
For example:
1. I am used to sleeping with the window open.
• (Not) precedes gerund
For example:
1. We talked about not going to the meeting, but finally decided we should go.

• Common verbs followed by gerunds (p. 307)
For example:
1. I enjoy reading stories
2. I enjoy to read stories
• Some verbs & phrasal verbs got the same meaning followed by gerund
For example:
1. Joe quit smoking
2. Joe gave up smoking

• To express most recreational activities
For example:
1. Did you go shopping?
2. We went fishing yesterday.

• Special expressions followed by –ing (p. 310).

 Expression of time or money
Jack waste a lot of time watching TV.
 Expression of place
She sat at her desk writing a letter
 Find/catch + (pro)noun + -ing
When I walked into my office, I found George using my telephone.
