OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
Explain the concept of verbals.
Mention the types of verbals.
Identify gerunds.
Verbals
Verbals are verb forms that look like verbs but do not function as
verb. They can function as nouns, adjectives or adverbs in sentences.
Verbals
There are 3 types of verbals:

➢ Gerunds
➢ Infinitives
➢ Participles
Gerunds
A gerund is the word formed when the suffix -ing is added to a verb and
functions like a noun.
To form a gerund,

Verb + ing
Climb + ing Climbing

Learn + ing Learning

Sing + ing Singing


Gerunds
Example:

Climbing is great exercise.

Swimming is my favourite sport.

Example:

Learning a new language may seem difficult.


Gerunds
Most times after using verbs like: enjoy, prefer, like, love…
we use a gerund right after.

Example: I enjoy hiking on Saturdays.

Gerunds serve many purposes in a sentence. They can function as;

● Subject
● Object of Preposition
● Direct Object
● Subject Complement
● Appositive

● A subject complement is a noun that with a linking verb and tells


something about the subject of the sentence. A subject
complement would almost always come after the linking verb.

● Appositives are nouns or pronouns placed beside another noun/pronoun
